When evaluating the quality of aquamarine, there are several key factors to consider. Use our easy guide to determine the best gemstone for you.

COLOR: Aquamarine is most valuable when it is a deep, even blue without any green. This is known as “Santa Maria” color. Pale stones with grayish tones are less desirable.
CLARITY: Aquamarines should not have visible inclusions. Those that do are usually fashioned into cabochons, beads, or carvings.
CUT STYLE: While most are cut into standard shapes and sizes, high-quality gems are custom cut. Watch out for windowing (large areas where light leaks out the pavilion without being reflected back through the crown).
CARAT WEIGHT: Aquamarines come in all sizes, from small to enormous. It’s difficult for enormous gems to be used in jewelry, so per-carat price can decrease for gems above 25 carats.
LOOK-ALIKE: Some blue topazes look like aquamarine, but aquamarine is much more valuable. Be sure to purchase an aquamarine with a GIA report to be certain of your gem’s identity.

GIA’s clarity scale has 11 potential grades for clarity. Clarity refers to a diamond's appearance when examined under 10X magnification, specifically assessing the presence, size, number, and location of internal inclusions and external blemishes.

If you’re looking for a round brilliant diamond without any visible inclusions, diamonds from Flawless (F) down to VS₁ don’t have any inclusions visible to the unaided eye. However, it is possible for minor surface blemishes to appear on Internally Flawless grades.

If you’re looking for a diamond without visible inclusions that is also relatively affordable, consider diamonds in the VS₁, VS₂ and SI₁ grades. All diamonds in the VS₁ grade have inclusions that would be difficult to see with the naked eye. Most diamonds in the VS₂ grade have inclusions that would be difficult to see with the naked eye, and some diamonds in the SI₁ grade have inclusions that would be difficult to see with the naked eye.

Because diamonds in the VS₂ and SI₁ grades cost less, finding a diamond with no inclusions visible to the naked eye can be an incredible value.

Be careful about going down to the I category to save money, however, as many of these diamonds may appear dull and may be prone to damage or cracking.
