Julia McIntyre

Julia moved to Ouray from Michigan with husband Ed and owned abundant undeveloped property in town. When Ed died, Julia made certain their properties, including Box Cañon, be a public natural resource attraction, without venturing into the amusement park realm which was the town desire of the time.

Earrings of sterling silver, blue glass beads, and a chalcedony teardrop reminiscent of her beloved waterfalls.

Kitty Heit

Kitty was known as the “Mother of the Miners” as she took care of countless destitute men after the Silver Panic of 1893. Before she was married she owned and operated the Bon Ton restaurant and used her success to build her own adjacent St. Elmo hotel. Known to help anyone in need, her spaces became a real home to so many far from their own.

Earrings of sterling silver, hematite beads, and gold colored seed beads reminiscent of the layers of silver and gold “her boys” mined.

Scarlet Daughters

The historical landscape of Ouray was much different than today with an abundance of whiskey, guns, and “girls” throughout town. Saloons, gambling dens, and dance halls peppered town by the dozens. The “ladies of the lamplight” or “scarlet daughters” are often nameless in the history books and were victims of senseless drunken violence, but they were no fools. They often carried guns of their own and sometimes used them on rowdy patrons!

Earrings of sterling silver and scarlet garnet baubles – perfect for dancing.

Evalyn Walsh-McLean

Daughter of local mining tycoon, Tom Walsh, Evalyn’s story reaches beyond the shadow of her father’s wealth. Evalyn lived a wild life - moved to Paris at fourteen, wore rouge, colored her hair, and imbibed - against the grain for a young socialite. After marrying publisher and owner of the Washington Post, she bought herself the Hope Diamond with her father’s inheritance and the Star of the East, because who doesn’t need nearly 150 carats of diamonds!

Earrings of sterling silver, crystal beads, and pale blue iolite in honor of her love of diamonds, pearls, and the color blue.

Irene Aloha Wright

Daughter to the builder of the Wright Opera House, Irene had a privileged childhood in Ouray. When sent to an elite boarding school in Virginia with gold coins sewn into her petticoat, teen Irene hopped a train to Mexico instead and evaded all for years. She worked as a translator, then published author while there, returned to the states and became a Stanford graduate. She wrote and lived in Cuba and Spain for decades after and when she died the New York Times called her “the historian of the Caribbean.”

Earrings of sterling silver, gold seed beads, and a pewter coin reminiscent of her petticoat wealth.
