So proud of how Benito showed out last night…

For those of you “upset” or “offended” ask yourself the following:

- What makes me more deserving of it having to be in English?
- Does he make me uncomfortable because he doesn’t fall into my narrative of how things “should be”?
- When was the last time I tried to understand or learn about a different culture, why does it bother me to do so?

Last night he gave us all a quick history lesson on Puerto Rico and it’s culture, maybe before taking the time criticize, I encourage you to expend that energy into researching the history and the origin of some of the messaging shared on that stage.

Many of you won’t, but that is your free will and I respect that.

Bottom line, if the way that I speak English professionally and elegantly doesn’t offend you, then it shouldn’t when I speak Spanish as well.

Respectfully, an American born in Puerto Rico. 🇵🇷

8 years ago today… I walked into a pre-op appointment for what was supposed to be a scheduled c-section two days later. Life, had other plans and approx 8 hours later Lorenzo Emanuele Torres was born.

Almost 12lbs at birth and still considered a “preemie” 🤣.

Lorenzo my sweet boy, these 8 years have flown by. I guard how long I close my eyes because it feels like every time I open them you grow another two inches 😩.

I am truly blessed to have the role of being your mom, of nurturing you, all while you nurture me. Your confidence, empathetic nature and beautiful heart solidifies what I already know about you. I’m so fortunate to be able to stand by and witness you be you.

Happy 8th birthday to the little boy who stole my heart. To the baby boy who snuggled me at every chance he had, to the little boy who would always asks me to lay in his bed and watch a movie with him, and now to the young little man who comes into the room to “check-in” on his momma.

As a person living with type 1 diabetes for over 20 years now…. I find the recent commentary on the new T1D Barbie deplorable, ignorant and completely disheartening.

I understand that unless you are directly affected by something, then the need to have a clear and concise understanding of it is not a priority.

What is concerning, is the absolute disregard to even have a basic understanding of what you are talking about prior to posting on a public platform.

Let me remind the people that are so bold behind a keyboard….

Type 1 diabetes is not a condition caused by poor eating habits, lack of exercise and because we are “fat”. Spreading this false narrative is more detrimental to the young eyes dealing with this condition while knowing that a cure is yet to come.

This narrative eats away at the parents and care givers who are doing everything in their power to make the lives of the person with type 1 diabetes as “normal” as possible.

This post may all be in vain, but I cannot help but to at least make the attempt to speak my mind on this.

Interestingly enough, I have dedicated the last week of my life to volunteer at an event geared and in support of people living with type 1 diabetes.

When this Barbie was announced the excitement from all of little girls drowned out the ignorance. The squeals of pictures being taken in the “Barbie booth” from little kids showing off their insulin pumps and medical devices cancelled out the hate.

Bottom line, love, empathy and compassion for people who’s lives may not look like yours will
ALWAYS win.

Alright guys, another year has passed and today I’ve officially embarked on my 37th year of life.

Do I feel any different. Yes, dang it! I do! I officially have this odd thing called back and knee pain and some days my hormones have me questioning weather or not I’m menopausal. 🤣

But all jokes aside… I am so grateful for this beautiful life and for my body that continues to carry me through it.

Thank you for all of the love I’ve received from so many! I am always so surprised each and every year by all of the calls and messages. I make it a point to respond to every single person individually, it’s my appreciation for you taking time out of your day to think of me. It never goes unnoticed.

This is 37 ☺️

10 years old today baby girl. 10 years ago today, I had the privilege of experiencing that surreal rush of emotions that becoming a mother for the first time is greeted with.

I think that every year that passes I will always sit back and try to take you in, just at that exact age and try to comprehend, “how did we get here so quickly?!”

Valentina you are joy, kindness, intelligence and beauty all wrapped into the perfect package.

As we enter these “pre-teen” years, my prayer is that the noise of this world won’t consume you. That when you look in the mirror you can see yourself through my eyes. You are perfect.

Happy Birthday Valentina 💟

Happy World Diabetes Day! I hope all of my dia-besties near and far have had a chance to be seen and heard today.

Living with T1D for over 21 years now has been a juggling act to say the least and this year has challenged me in ways I did not expect mentally and medically.

And yet… we continue. We continue because that is the only option. There are no breaks here. It takes a special type of resilience to live with this disease and I applaud all of my dia-buddies who show the world on a daily basis just how resilient we are 💙
