13 years ago today for my 20th birthday I got my lovely Rocky. I always knew I wanted to work with animals but it was that day I decided that I wanted to work with snakes specifically. Later that year I got my first job with a snake breeder and long story short, now I have the privilege of working my dream job with rattlesnakes to produce antivenom that saves lives. I've been in the presence of amazing creatures, worked alongside super cool people, and gotten to make a difference in the lives of people and snakes alike with education and outreach between then and now. How fortunate I am.

I think my page is going to become all garters all the time. This friend comes courtesy of another relocation request. I was able to have a longer conversation about this species with them today while I held this friend. Maybe this is a sign that we'll have a day where they accept these reptilian neighbors. For now, I'm grateful they don't want them harmed.

I have never seen garter snakes as frequently as I do in Utah.

I had someone reach out to me while I was at work because they had a snake in their yard today. With it being several hours later by the time I was able to drop by, I was pretty sure the snake would be gone. To my surprise, this little friend popped out after a few minutes of combing through their vegetable garden. I wasn't able to convince them to let it stay so I moved her a short distance away to be safely out of sight.

Rattlesnakes have two genera: Crotalus and Sistrurus. Most species belong to Crotalus. These guys are typically the more "infamous" like western diamondback or timber rattlesnakes. Our massassauga and pygmy rattlesnake friends belong to Sistrurus. I really like the patterning on the tops of their heads, like you can see on this pygmy rattlesnake's shed.

A pleasant surpise! While taking some time out to visit today, my daughter spotted a garter snake! It was already a great say but this was the cherry on top! What better way to appreciate our National Parks than having special moments with its residents?

Another lovely Sunday, another lovely snake find. Since being in Utah I've really been searching for rubber boas and while I remain unsuccessful for now, I did get to find a new garter snake species. We actually found several wandering garters today!
