I'm not usually one to jump on trends, but when I heard Yeti was coming out with a new color called "venom," I did have to get one. We found some already available in person yesterday and I decided to do a silly little photo shoot with Antoinette. Now of course she isn't venomous, but I think we can call her an honorary rattlesnake this one time.

I can't believe I missed Rattlesnake Appreciation Day! We have so much to be thankful for with these underdogs- from their important roles as predators and prey within their ecosystems to lifesaving medications made from their venom.

I am especially grateful that I get to work with rattlesnakes everyday. Since starting my new job, I spend most of my days with mojave rattlesnakes. They're actually the one species used in Crofab production that I didn't have prior experience with. I think they have some super pretty sheds too!

Maybe the Year of the Snake did have something special in store for me. I am happy to say I've spent the last few weeks in a new home in a new state thanks to my new job working the venom line for Crofab production! I love the animals and the work environment. I am thrilled to have gotten this opportunity.

It's , so here's a cool guy to celebrate the occasion with. When people think of venomous snakes, it's often a viper such as a western diamondback rattlesnake or an elapid such as a king cobra. However, we have venomous colubrids, too! Vine snakes have a venom that can pack a punch.

Venom doesn't just take lives, though. There are many cases where we've found ways for venoms to save lives, too. Several snake venoms are actively used in medications, are being explored for hopeful future medical purposes, and, of course, are used in the production of antivenoms.

Is there a better way to celebrate the 4th of July than by spending time at any location that's part of the National Park Service? Today, I took Apollo and Ava to the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail, where they became B.A.R.K. Rangers! I think we'll separate some time to do this at more participating National Park locations that offer it. Thank you so much to the ranger there who swore them in and helped me get their pawprit "signatures" on their certificates.

When people see my work in person, I often get responses like, "Are these the skins?" or "I've never seen sheds with color on them!" While not every species or morph has much (if any) pigment on their sheds, a lot of them have more than people often assume. Take this carpet python shed, for example. I don't do anything to add color. This is why I like to work with them so much!
