A cracked ring is just a start. This one originally belonged to the customer’s uncle but it doesn’t fit. Plus he’s now getting married in two weeks. It only needed to go up half a size but stretching it would’ve snapped it at the crack, so I cut straight through the crack instead. Then there’s the two-tone problem… Solder in one solid color and you get an interrupting stripe. So I fit a white gold base and a yellow gold insert until both of them slid in like puzzle pieces. Then I soldered them in and carved the design back to match.

A customer brought in his fully braided white gold wedding band that he hadn’t worn in over 10 years. He needed it sized up to full sizes with a perfectly matching pattern. Anyone could add two sizes to the ring, but making it invisible is the hard part so I cut it open, soldered in a solid block of white gold, and handmade every twist and braid to match. This is my first (and hopefully only) time sizing up a braided ring.

Three of six prongs had worn out and let go. The stone slipped away to the cushions below.
The cleaning lady found it and gave it right back. That’s a level of honest most people lack.
Retipping is faster, but it won’t hold as long, so the head came off whole and a new one went on strong.
I soldered, cut seats, gave the inside a shine, then sprang all six prongs. Now the stone’s sitting fine.

A little girl asked me to make a ring so her Barbie could get married, but there was one problem: Some of Barbie’s fingers are fused together. Cutting them apart wasn’t happening so she got the only design that works… A two-finger engagement ring. I drew gold wire down to half a millimeter, added a four prong head, and set a real pink diamond. This thing is absolutely minuscule but it’s so cute!

A customer flew halfway across the country with an art deco platinum ring that looked like it had been stomped on. Missing diamonds, missing prongs, cracked across the top, and warped on every axis. I offered to fully remake it, but since it’s a family heirloom, he wanted the original or nothing at all. I tried my best to straighten out all the damaged sections, but I hit a wall when it came to the top. So we compromised and he let me rebuild just the center section. I spent three days restoring this ring, using almost every tool and technique in my repertoire. Now it’s back from the grave.

A customer flew in from Texas for one repair, her late father‘s cracked turquoise ring. Instead of hiding the cracks, she wanted it highlighted using the Japanese art of Kintsugi. I made my own gold dust and mixed it right into the epoxy that fills the crack. This is a first time repair for me as it’s is not a common technique used in jewelry, but I think it came out pretty cool looking. What do you think?

A nurse brought in her pawn shop find, a ring that kept snagging her gloves at work. Turns out the tanzanite never belonged in that setting to begin with. The ring was made for a rectangular stone so we swapped it out for an emerald cut emerald. I rebuilt the four main prongs for the emerald after filing down the top so her new stone sits lower and won’t catch gloves as easily. I also retipped the halo diamonds. No more snagging or rattling!

Mandy brought me her parents‘s rings after they both passed away. She wanted them combined and turned into a pendant to represent her favorite childhood memory of holding both their hands. I cut both wedding bands apart and intersected them, then I soldered them together in the new arrangement, set the diamond in the middle, and attached them to a chain.

A customer came in for a simple ring resize, no big deal, right? But her diamonds were covered in a layer of grime that just didn’t want to come off regardless of how aggressive I got with my cleaning. Dirty diamonds do not like fire. What started as an easy fix turned into a major project.

Carmella’s rings never stayed lined up on her finger.each one was a different size and they were constantly shifting. So I resized all three, annealed the gold, reshaped the shanks, and soldered them together into one perfectly aligned ring. A lot of work, but well worth the end result!
