Gem Identification. It is not a mystery but it is science here in the lab. A fun ID today was for a nice clear crystal rock someone found on a hike here in Utah. It reminded me of a time Cole did some crystalline calcite we found at Goblin valley several years ago. Here are some pictures and videos of our SG (Scientific Grade) Gemmo Raman 532 green laser in action. This material was easily identified as rock crystal quartz.

One of the coolest Valentines gifts that we did this year at Utah Gem Gallery was a colored lab-grown diamond. I love selling colored gems and it is always fun to sell a colored diamond. Origin of color is important even in lab grown. Some treatments need special care to preserve the color. But when the color is intrinsic to the chemical make up then it is usually stable. This stone even though it is lab-grown is colored by Boron substitution into the crystal structure. Boron doped diamonds are otherwise known as Type IIb diamonds and are extremely rare. These diamonds have a steely blue color caused by the Boron substitution into the crystal structure. The infamous Hope diamond is a Type IIb. This 1.29 ct. lab grown diamond is also Type IIb and displays that subtle shade of steely blue. So literally this gift looks like a million bucks because it is colored in the exact same way as natural stone. If you would like help with your jewelry or gem needs feel free to send us a message! With gold prices at all time highs we are seeing some interesting things come in. This was jewelry recovered from a fire over 35 yrs ago. This was actually in a fire safe that went above the safes rating. The diamonds are mostly burned and damaged. Other gems are scorched beyond use. Many cracked from thermal expansion while in their settings. Worth over 800 dollars to them still! Happy to sort through things to find value.

Today we had a fun old diamond come in for appraisal. Initially nothing unique but then on the bottom of the diamond it had this cute little set of triangular indented naturals. After showing them to the customer with a loupe I snapped a quick picture of them. Then I called the GIA to check on the old report that some of the old paperwork mentioned. Turns out the report was from 1984. 40 yrs ago. I asked for the exact date and she said May 7th. I was like really? 40 yrs ago to the day? Amazing. Not sure what it means but it was an interesting appraisal.

A great rule of thumb is that gems have to be pretty. And treatments matter. This stone was shared on a FB group for trades people. It reminded me of my "hidden" camera at one of the Tucson Gem Shows several years ago. I play dumb and have some fun. Watch the video if you know gems and want a little chuckle. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yijOJ3oaxNM

Be careful buying anything at auctions. I have seen so many of these come into the lab lately. The picture below is from KSL. Please understand the market is global. There is an established cash market in the jewelry trading centers as well as a pretty good one online in closed groups. There is basically no chance you will buy something for low enough to sell it to a real dealer. You will likely be over paying for anything you buy and then you will be like the person selling this on KSL asking 10,000 for a $400 item. Just don't please. It is too painful to watch. If you have never listened to "The Richest Man in Babylon" please listen to the next 4 minutes of the book here where he talks about trusting your Brick layer to go buy gems. Please if you are Bricklayer or a doctor or a school teacher a marine or whatever just do that and do it well. Otherwise you will be paying tuition to the school of hard knocks. https://youtu.be/wglndSWrvsM?t=4183
