He was 100 yards away. He did everything right. The bison charged him anyway.
Most Yellowstone bison attacks have the same story. Someone got too close. Someone wanted a selfie. Someone ignored every warning sign the park posted and paid for it.
This one was different.
According to an eyewitness who was photographing the encounter at Bridge Bay Campground, the man and his grandson were roughly 100 yards from the bull bison, well beyond Yellowstone's recommended 25-yard minimum distance. They weren't approaching. They weren't provoking. They were doing exactly what you're supposed to do.
The bull had already been agitated. When a white pickup truck drove past, the bison charged the vehicle first. Then it turned.
And it charged straight at the man and his grandson.
The grandson made it to safety. The grandfather didn't. The bull caught him near the hip, hooked him, and launched him roughly eight feet into the air. He landed with serious injuries.
July is the peak of the bison rut. Testosterone surges through mature bulls, and animals that seem calm one moment can become explosively aggressive the next. During rut, bulls don't always need a reason. They just need a trigger. A truck engine. A sudden movement. Sometimes nothing at all.
If the eyewitness account is confirmed, this is one of those rare cases where someone followed every rule and was still attacked.
And that's the part most people don't want to hear.
You can keep your distance. You can read the signs. You can do everything the rangers tell you to do. And a 2,000-pound animal in the middle of a hormonal surge can still decide that today, the rules don't apply.
Wild means unpredictable. Always.

Who else grew up hunting out of homemade tree stands?

Before ladder stands and lightweight hang-ons were everywhere, a lot of us hunted from stands we built ourselves. I can still remember helping my grandpa carry 2x4s, a hammer, nails, and a saw into the woods to build a stand. If the spot was too far to haul lumber, we’d just carry the tools, cut a few small trees on site, and build one right there in the woods.

Looking back, they probably weren’t the safest stands ever built, but they sure made some unforgettable memories. Building them was almost as much a part of deer season as hunting from them.
