A Study in Polarity
All six pieces in this series are now on view at FiftyNorth Senior Center as part of Echoes & Shadows, an exhibit pairing visual artists with work by local poets. My pieces are shown alongside Torild Homstad’s poem When the World Feels Heavy.
I started making these during a period when I could barely get off the couch. I didn’t have the capacity to design, so I turned to patterns by Peggy Sudz Lampwork and focused instead on choosing colors and stitching one bead at a time.
Looking at them together now, I’m struck by how little the finished work reflects the state I was in while making it. They’re orderly, colorful and hopeful. After a lifetime of making jewelry, they’ve become some of the most personal work I’ve ever made.
Echoes & Shadows is on view at FiftyNorth through October 2nd.
