Sultan Al-Kamil offered them a deal. He would give them Jerusalem and release Christian prisoners in exchange for Damietta.

The papal legate, Pelagius of Albano, said no. He wanted to press on to Cairo for a bigger victory.

His choice led to disaster. The Nile River flooded, surrounding the Crusader camp.

Trapped and starving, they had to surrender. They gave Damietta back and left Egypt empty-handed.

Jerusalem stayed out of reach because of one man's failed gamble.
