Collectors battled intensely for this extraordinary horological milestone.
Few expected a prototype wristwatch from independent watchmaker F.P. Journe to become one of the most valuable timepieces ever sold by an independent creator. Built as an early technical achievement in the brand’s history, the Tourbillon Souverain à Remontoir d’Égalité “15/93” holds immense significance as one of the very first wristwatches crafted by François-Paul Journe himself.
What many viewed as a niche collector’s piece sparked fierce international bidding, ultimately realizing more than CHF 7.3 million and setting a world auction record for both an F.P. Journe wristwatch and any watch created by an independent watchmaker.
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect is that the watch owed its value neither to diamonds, exotic materials, nor celebrity ownership. Instead, its worth was rooted in historical importance, extreme rarity, and its place at the beginning of one of modern watchmaking’s most celebrated careers—demonstrating that provenance and legacy can outweigh even the most extravagant luxuries.
