Sasha Nixon Metalsmith

Sasha Nixon Metalsmith My jewelry is the result of my love affair with light, line, and the visual and tactile experience of handling my materials.

I explore the play between light and darkness, finding harmony in the glittering contrast. I have been creating jewelry for over 16 years. I am currently pursuing a Masters degree in material culture and my academic background informs my work. I study the history of making jewelry and find inspiration in it. I am currently working out of my studio in New York City on my own work as well as, in con

junction with the Jewelry Arts Inc., on the reconstruction of ancient jewelry techniques and technologies. My jewelry is sold on my website www.sashanixonmetalsmith.com, as well as through several stockiest: Gather in Bloomington IN, and The Smithery Columbus OH. You can also follow me on Instagram.

Akrotiri was amazing…and so hot…but amazing. Archaeological site photo dump 😜 and a plaster cast of an absolutely spectacular table the shape of which was preserved in the ash. Anyone want to make me one?

The only proper response to finding jewelry pieces from Schleimann’s Troy Treasure …and them being out on loan… I went through all the stages of grief 🫥🫣🤬😫😭😮‍💨😞 …gifted by Sophia Schliemann though, that’s pretty cool. Second to last photo is the display with the missing pieces, and the last is the famous photo of Sophia wearing some of the jewelry found at the site (both found on Wiki commons)

Jewelry! The frescos at Akrotiri are amazingly well preserved and delicate. Showing women wearing and presenting jewelry while preforming other tasks (one next to a gryphon and who doesn’t love that), then some jewelry for the walls (also amazing), and I had to provide context for the display which was spectacular. These were embellishments on the walls inside a building and they have been reassembled and displayed as such with the blueprint of the floor plan recreated on the floor. This is very effective in helping modern visitors understand them as something other than paintings and the effect they would have had surrounding you in a room. I’m in love 😍😍😍

Ephemera fairs in New York. Amazing. On Sunday I found four pages of Diderot's 1750 encyclopedia. The Jeweler pages. They came home with me.

Our objective is to showcase work that reinterprets cultural symbols and icons through the use of material, scale, wearability, and interaction. Our goal is to curate work that challenges and “plays” with the viewer’s understanding of what that symbol has come to represent. We are interested in icons and symbols that appear in the commercial jewelry world such as the bow, heart, snakes, crowns, keys and the faceted stone as well as in our everyday lives through emojis and other cultural symbols. We want to see these symbols interpreted from a different viewpoint, providing the viewer/wearer a new lens to interpret and experience icons; challenging the viewers preconditioned definition of what the icon represents.⠀
