Absolutely exquisite

This striking 18.68 carat opal cabochon from a deposit near Wegel Tena in Ethiopia displays strong zoning. The bands represent many of the types of opal found there, which vary from transparent to opaque, brownish orange to white, with and without play-of-color. The zoning likely correspond to successive deposition events that caused opal to form in horizontal layers. The layer of white opal with strong play-of-color contains parallel structures called digit patterns. Because they are perpendicular to the horizontal layers, it means they developed vertically. All eyes on cat's-eye opal. Cat's-eye opal most often has a yellow to brown or honey bodycolor, but it can also occur in other colors. The cat’s-eye effect, called chatoyancy, is usually caused by light reflecting off tiny parallel needle-like inclusions or hollow growth tubes within the gem.
