Modèle Facetté Diamond Ring by Suzanne Belperron, Paris, circa 1950

This ring is a study in shadow and light. Called modèle facetté, or faceted model, the form of the ring itself is modeled on the facets of a gemstone. Even with the strong geometric planes, the form expresses the sensual curves Belperron favored in the rounded edges where the facets meet, and in the rounded bezel of the cushion-cut central diamond. The simple color palette of platinum and diamonds is given depth by the different stone cuts and their myriad reflections. Belperron carefully chose the stone placement on her jewels, working and reworking the arrangement in a wax model until everything was perfect and exactly how she pictured it for her client.

Bakelite, Steel, Gold, and Diamond “What’s the word Hummingbird?” Cuff Bracelet by Daniel Brush, New York, circa 2004 Whether creating a sculpture, a painting, or one of his jewels, Daniel Brush was one of the most unconventional and extraordinary artists and is currently being celebrated by an exhibition L'ÉCOLE, School of Jewelry Arts “Daniel Brush, the Art of Line and Light.” Brush’s creations encompassed a wide variety of media, and each of his pieces is an entity unto itself—a unique work of art. This bangle is part of a group of pieces inspired by his childhood memories of visiting New York City with his parents. Brush said, “My mother and father owned a children’s clothing store for over forty years. In the 1950s, I traveled with them to the Seventh Avenue garment district, where they placed wholesale orders for dresses, underwear, shoes, stuffed animal toys, and little girl dresser sets. The sets had a mirror, comb, and brush, and often a bangle with rhinestones.”

Lenfant was a master goldsmith who looked at chains as a “harmony of sounds, shapes and textures” as he wrote in his book Le livre de la chaîne. He referred to the “rustle of rolling parts, which slide against each other [like] chain bells” and said that jewels should be “in every gesture of life.” He understood chain construction as no other jeweler has and was able to create unsurpassed examples, such as this necklace. By considering the construction of chains from all the senses, Lenfant created masterpieces, as shown by this exquisite necklace, a rare and desirable addition to any collection. Bold sculptural gold jewelry was a signature of midcentury style. The warm, malleable metal allowed the best French workmasters, Jaques Lenfant and Péry et Fils, to create texture and movement in their designs. These three important gold pieces create an unmatched visual story of light and sound when worn.

“Jonquil” Diamond Flower Brooch by Van Cleef & Arpels, Paris, circa 1950

Created from an array of diamond cuts, this flower brooch is large in size and flexible enough to drape down the shoulder. The details of the jonquil, or daffodil, are highly specific, with the central crown like flower represented with a marquise diamond surrounded by round diamonds. Each surrounding leaf is shaped individually and even the bump in the step is represented beautifully.
