Each of these old European cuts is one of a kind, as they were cut by hand, no two were ever cut exactly alike, which is exactly what makes them worth seeking out.

These stones are available now. At Thomas Laine, we source the stone first, then design and set to measurement around it ?every setting made for the exact diamond in front of us, not the other way around.

If you’re considering an old European cut for your own piece, this is a good place to start.

Which one would you want to see set?

Friday evening, wrapping up before this pair ships out.
These are 1ct diamond studs, and if you’re wondering why I keep coming back to this size, it’s simple: big enough to catch light, small enough to wear every single day without a second thought.
Not every diamond needs to make a statement. Some are just meant to be worn.
What carat size do you actually reach for daily?

Our Toi et Moi from the Wave Collection.
A pear-cut diamond and a round brilliant, set side by side in a bezel-claw hybrid setting, part bezel, part claw, so each stone stays secure without losing light from the edges.
The Wave band flows directly from the settings, low and flush against the finger.
Made to order, in your metal, with diamonds or colored gemstones paired to your eye.
Pear and round, or would you choose a different pairing?

Keeping your ring sparkling.. especially with summer weather and sunscreens etc

This is a 1.39ct old mine cut, hand-cut long before modern grading or precision cutting came along.
Old mine cuts have a softer, more romantic sparkle than a modern brilliant;larger facets, a higher crown, and a cushion-like outline give them a warmth modern cuts don’t have.
At 1.39 carats, this one has real presence. Striking as a solo engagement ring stone, or as the centre of a three-stone design flanked by two smaller stones.
Would you wear this as a solitaire, or dressed with side stones?
Or maybe just a sick pinkie ring ?

Congratulations to Amelia and her husband on their wedding; and thank you for sharing these photos with us.
Every image looks like it belongs in Vogue. The light, the colour, the details,it was such a beautiful day, and an honour for our amethyst and baroque pearl earrings to be a small part of it.

These earrings are a special memento of her beautiful day, to be treasured and reworn many times.

Personally, I absolutely love the choice and styling of these earrings in this editorial worthy beautiful day .. what a privilege.❤️

Old mine cut vs old European cut, here is a mini guide to antique diamond cuts and what makes each one different.
These stones were cut by hand, before standardised grading existed. Every one is unique. They have warmth and character that modern brilliants don’t, simply because they were never meant to be perfect. They were meant to be beautiful by candlelight.
If you’re drawn to antique diamonds, the most important thing to know is that cut matters more than carat, colour is part of the charm, and inclusions tell a story.
Have you ever seen an old mine cut in person? They look nothing like a modern diamond.

I’ve been sourcing a lot of emeralds this week, and it reminded me of something most people don’t know.
Colombia has mined emeralds for over a thousand years. Stones set before the 1950s were almost never treated, many are completely untouched. In a market where heavy treatment is standard, that’s genuinely rare.
Zambia? Commercial mining only began in the 1970s. There is no such thing as an antique Zambian emerald.
If you ever come across a pre-1950s Colombian in estate jewellery, have it assessed by a qualified gemologist and ask for a lab report specifying treatment level. “None” or “insignificant” are the words you want to see.
Have you ever held an antique emerald? What was the stone like?
