Alexandrite is a relatively modern gemstone, discovered in Russia in 1831. What makes alexandrite such a unique gemstone is its chameleon-like ability to change colors. Alexandrite has been described as an “emerald by day, ruby by night.” It is a lovely green in both daylight and fluorescent light; it changes color to a purplish red in incandescent light!
