Eugène Fontenay turned ancient gold into a living art form.
Created circa 1870 by the celebrated Parisian jeweler, this 18K gold Etruscan Revival locket centers a matte enamel miniature by Salon painter Eugène Richet — a technique that recalls the softly weathered frescoes of Pompeii. Fontenay drew inspiration from the famed Campana Collection acquired by Napoleon III and formulated his own gold alloy to achieve a distinctive antique hue. This series of jewels earned a Gold Medal at the 1867 Paris Exposition Universelle, and comparable examples reside in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the British Museum.
A jewel where fine art and goldsmithing become one.
