Sorting through clothing is probably one of the most difficult tasks to organize during a natural disaster.
HERE ARE SOME TIPS FROM A LONG TIME VOLUNTEER:
For all those planning to donate clothing to the survivors of Hurricane Helene:
* Bag like items together: CLOTHING, TOWELS, SHEETS BY SIZE, BLANKETS BY SIZE, ONLY PACKAGED UNDER GARMENTS, SHOES(clearly labeled with size)
CLOTHING-
WOMENS, MENS, TEEN GIRL, CHILDREN BOY OR GIRL ( BY AGE: NEWBORN TO SIZE 16
-Womens by size class (reg or plus)
t-shirt sleeve(s/s) shirts
Long sleeve (l/s)
(including sweaters & sweatshirts
Shorts
Pants
Sleepwear
-Mens by size:
ALL tops S, M, L, XL, 2XL & up
Bottoms by waist measurement
- Light jackets or hooded sweatshirts in all sizes
-Accessories: practical belts, baseball caps, duffle bags, backpacks
* Practical shoes(sneakers, hiking boots, slip on shoes, strap on sandals) of all sizes
-Clearly label what is inside your box or bag; use clear bags when possible
IF THIS SEEMS LIKE A DAUNTING TASK; IMAGINE BEING THE VOLUNTEER OPENING DOZENS OF MYSTERY BAGS OR BOXES.
-If you're donating sneakers or shoes tuck a new clean pair of socks in the toe
Think through exactly WHAT you are donating! 🤔
Maybe include a note of encouragement in pockets, bags, shoes. 🥰
The needs will change later for certain but for now help to lessen the load on the volunteers and get people what they need faster.
God bless you all and keep the prayers coming! 💕🙏
