Elemental Sexual Assault Protection

Elemental Sexual Assault Protection Elemental is a primary prevention and risk reduction sexual assault protection program

Elemental is a sexual assault protection program that was developed at Ball State University by Chad Menning, Mellisa Holtzman, and a team 15 students from a number of disciplines across campus. The program combines primary prevention programming on assault, consent, party culture, party safety and so forth with physical and verbal risk-reduction training. During the 6 hour seminar, students learn

how to recognize sexual threats early, give and get consent, communicate with partners about sex, and use a variety of self-protection techniques that vary in intensity and level of violence.

Hi! I am JoJo Norris. My husband James and I recently took over Elemental S*xual Assault Protection from the programs Founder Mellisa Holtzman. We could not be more excited, as we love this program and understand its value to give young people the tools they will use to keep themselves safe from unwanted s*xual contact, even in complex perhaps confusing situations.

We have been around Elemental Protection since the beginning - James helping Mellisa and Co-Founder Chadwick Menning develop the physical defenses taught in this course, I as the first certified instructor. We have been teaching the course at High Schools and Universities here in Ohio for years.

The physical and psychological strategies and tools taught in this 6 hour course are based in To-Shin Do, the martial art we teach at our full time martial arts school CincinnatiQuestCenter.com in our training group in Yellow Springs, on NinjaSelfDefense.com and at workshops around the country.

The brilliance behind what Mellisa and Chad did, using their knowledge and research skills as Sociology professors, is create a proven effective program that fits the precise needs students, giving them tools they will actually use in a medium that makes sense for the University setting. Combining primary prevention educational programming on assault, consent, party culture, and party safety with physical and verbal risk reduction training, this workshop is more comprehensive than others. During the seminar, students learn how to recognize s*xual threats early, give and get consent, communicate with partners about s*x, and use a variety of self-protection techniques that vary in intensity and level of violence.

We have taught hundreds of high school and college students this specific program, and are excited to help thousands more access the life changing skills taught herein. Thank you Mellisa and Chad for trusting us with the next phase of your incredible work.

A former Elemental student just contacted me. She was putting groceries in her trunk when a man came up and reached out toward her. She je**ed away from him, yelled “NO!” and quickly got in the car. The man then tried to open the driver’s side door! Thankfully, it was locked and she and her sister were able to drive away, but she was shaken up and angry. She told me that if not for Elemental she probably would not have responded so quickly or forcefully. That’s really important—by continuously practicing something as simple as yelling “NO!” during Elemental, she was able to make use of that skill when she needed it most, and she did it without having to think about it. ❤️❤️
