Did anyone else see the clouds this morning? In case you missed it, it looked like this. My morning drive to drop my son off at day care, I couldn’t stop snapping photos.

Native American artists have used the American flag in art since the late 1800s, symbolizing patriotism, military service (especially with stars and stripes), cultural adaptation, protest (when inverted), or as popular trade goods, appearing in beadwork, textiles, and contemporary pieces to reflect complex relationships with the U.S., from assimilation to resistance. It often blends with traditional designs on everyday items, ceremonial objects, or fine art, showcasing multifaceted meanings from pride in service to critical commentary.

Modeled by Joey. Thank you Joey! I wanted to show that these pendants are a wonderful gift for any gender. To create this pendant, I have taken a smoky quartz stone and beaded it using the gourd stitch method (also known as pe**te stitch) to create a bezel. The front side of the pendant is as beautiful as the back side. I used fireline thread which is a brand of very strong and thin fishing line. Beaters discovered it works great as a beading thread, and it works especially well for pe**te stitch beading. ♥️🔥🧵🪡

*Please note the sterling silver snake chain is sold separately.

Smoky quartz is known for having grounding, protective, and stress-relieving properties.

The Four Directions Artist Statement: Photographs of my family are printed on pieces of canvas. Around each photo I have beaded 4 colors, which correspond to 4 sacred stones, the 4 directions, 4 sacred plants -Corn, Beans, Squash and To***co 🌱- as well as the 4 mountains🏔️, which mark the boundaries of Dinétah (Navajo homeland). Each piece of canvas is sewn to the central weaving, the heart of the piece🫀. Then I have lashed the resulting cross-shaped textile with twine to suspend it within a structure made from fallen tree branches, which represents a Navajo loom. In “The Four Directions” I am attempting to come to terms with questions relating to my identity as a half white, Navajo woman who was born and grew up away from Dinétah, in Minnesota. —Carolyn L. Anderson
