For those of you born in February, Happy Birthday! Amethyst is your birthstone and is a symbol of clarity, discipline and wisdom. The amethyst gemstone is typically a shade of purple and can range in color from pale lavender to deep violet. The intensity can vary depending upon the amount of iron and the presence of natural irradiation during the stone’s formation. Generally, darker stones are more valuable, though some high-quality amethysts show lighter purple hues with exceptional clarity and brilliance.

Amethyst is a fairly durable gemstone with a Mohs rating of 7, making it quite durable. They can be safely cleaned with warm soapy water and a soft brush. It is best to store them separately in a dark cool place to prevent scratches and sun-induced color change.

To celebrate February, we are featuring this 1.70ct amethyst pendant set in sterling silver. We invite you to view this creation and many others in our studio. We are open Tuesday-Friday, 9am-5pm, or by appointment by calling 715-235-7766.

For January, we wanted to show you one of the rarer varieties of garnet, the Mali garnet. Mali garnets are a relatively new gem discovery. They were found in Mali, West Africa in 1994.
Its colors range from green to yellow-green, yellow, gold, and brown. Characteristics of this gemstone include great brilliance and “fire”.

Mali garnets symbolize new beginnings, hope, and connection with Mother Earth. Yellow Mali garnets join other yellow gemstones in offering greater happiness, intellect, and optimism.

Mali garnets are a rare and beautiful find, fitting for anyone similarly unique who wants to break the mold of standard red garnets. Today we are featuring this 0.68ct yellow Mali garnet ring in 14K white gold. We invite you to visit our studio to view our garnet creations as well as others. We are available Tuesday-Friday 9am-5pm or by appointment anytime. We look forward to your visit!

For those born in January, we celebrate you by featuring your birthstone, the garnet. Garnet’s history spans over 5,000 years, from Bronze Age jewelry to the ancient Egyptian pharaohs, symbolizing life, protection, and safe travel. It’s one of the oldest known gemstones. Archeologists have recovered garnet necklaces and talismans from Ancient Egyptian tombs and mummies.

Garnets come in various colors like red, purple, pink, orange, yellow, or green. They can be found in Madagascar, Russia, and Kenya.

Today, we are featuring this 2.13ct millennium cut garnet and diamond pendant. It is interesting to note that the millennium cut gemstone has 1000 facets! It is difficult to comprehend the amount of work needed to make this cut. The initial shaping, the finer cutting and then the various stages of polishing means that some 5,000 to 10,000 minute yet highly accurate separate actions are required.

We invite you to see this garnet creation as well as others in our studio. We are open Tuesday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. See you soon!

It is time to honor those who were born in March. Happy Birthday! Your birthstone is aquamarine, which symbolizes serenity, tranquility, and is associated with the sea. Ancient mariners claimed the gem would calm waves and keep sailors safe at sea. Aquamarine is also thought to bring happiness in marriage and is also given as a gift on the 19th wedding anniversary.

Aquamarine can be cut into many interesting shapes. The Step cut is a type of faceted gem characterized by facets that are rectangular or square. Facets are usually parallel to each other, as well. Usually, a step cut is chosen when the gem cutter wants to show off saturated aquamarine color, and the rough gem has few to no inclusions. There are several shapes of the step cut: Emerald cut (a classic rectangle seen in emeralds), Baguette cut (rectangular, but longer and skinnier), Asscher cut (a square version of the emerald cut), Brilliant cut (round, oval, and cushion or a softer asscher square). Other types of cuts include Cabochon cut, which is non-faceted gem cutting in round or pear shapes.

We have been fortunate to have the opportunity to work with the gems of master gemstone cutter, John Dyer. He is known worldwide for his ability and passion for precision. His gems are exceptionally beautiful. John’s trademarked “Dreamscape” cut is a unique, freeform gemstone cut known for its complex faceting patterns and intricate grooves and bubbles that enhance the gemstone’s natural inclusions and color variations.

Today we are featuring our original design aquamarine and diamond pendant. It shows off John’s Dreamscape cut 9.80 ct aquamarine with diamond accents set in 18K white gold. This was a previously commissioned piece that we wanted to share with you. Let us know if you would like to work with us to create a unique aquamarine piece for you!

We are available Tuesday-Friday 9am-5pm (closed 12pm-1pm for lunch) and can be reached by calling 715-235-7766 or email [email protected]

Amethyst is the birthstone for February, making it a perfect gift for those born in this month. It symbolizes sincerity, peace, and temperance, and is thought to bring its wearer good luck and protection. Amethyst is also given as the gem for the 6th and 17th anniversaries.

Amethyst is said to have various healing properties. It’s believed to help with insomnia, pain relief, and stress reduction. Many people use amethyst in meditation practices to promote calmness and clarity of mind.

While amethyst is best known for its purple color, it actually comes in a range of hues from pale lilac to deep violet. The color can change depending on the amount of iron and manganese in the quartz.

The quality of an amethyst directly depends on the depth of the mineral: the deeper the deposit, the higher the quality of its characteristics. The most valuable specimens are deep-colored amethysts with a strong reddish-violet hue or dark purple without any color zoning.

The largest cut amethyst was mined in Brazil and weighs 401.52 carats. It was cut in the shape of an emerald and donated to the Smithsonian in 2012. Amethyst can also be found in northern Wisconsin near Lake Superior! Perhaps you can find some this summer.

To celebrate February, we are highlighting cushion-cut amethyst with pink tourmaline earrings in sterling silver. We invite you to visit our studio to browse our collection. Our hours are Tuesday-Friday 9am – 5pm (closed 12-1pm for lunch) and by appointment anytime by calling 715-235-7766.

Happy Birthday to those born in January! Your birthstone is garnet and has been designated as such since the 15th century. The gemstone is also given to commemorate the 2nd wedding anniversary and is also a symbol of lasting friendship.

There are five primary types of garnet. The traditional deep red garnet is called pyrope and alamandine. The other famous type of garnet, discovered in 1967, is tsavorite, a brilliant green stone. It is named for the Tsavo East National Park in Kenya and is part of the grossular species. Others include spessartine and andradite garnet, which come in a variety of shades ranging from vivid mandarin to colorless gems.

Throughout history, garnet was mined in the Czech Republic. Today they are found throughout the world, including the United States. It is interesting to note that the garnet was designated as the state gemstone of New York in 1969. They are found in the northern part of the state, the largest mine being the Barton Mine. The largest garnet ever discovered in New York State was unearthed in 1885, by a laborer digging a sewer in Manhattan. It was estimated to be 430 million years old and weighs 4.4kg. It has been given the title of “subway garnet” and can be viewed at the American Museum of Natural History.

Our newest garnet creation can be viewed in our studio. To celebrate January, we are featuring this 2.03ct red garnet in sterling pendant. Our showcase features several colors and types of garnet in pendants, rings, and earrings. We are available Tuesday-Friday 9am-5pm (closed for lunch 12pm-1pm) and by appointment anytime by calling 715-235-7766. We look forward to your visit!
