13 days ago, I thought I was signing up to learn more about storytelling.
I didn’t expect quite so much experimenting, second-guessing, or discovering how differently people respond when I let them see more of the person behind the jewelry.
I still have eight days to go.
And I still have absolutely no idea where this is going.
Apparently, that’s part of the fun.😉
Are you following along? I’m glad our paths have crossed.

At 20 I never imagined I would have two careers I loved, 25 years each.
One ended with an accomplishment I never expected.
The other has given me something I never expected either: and I still don’t want it to end.
Funny how differently success can look the second time around.
Follow along. I’m still curious about what comes next.

At 78, i’m beginning to think that having it all figured out may be highly overrated.
Every time I think experience has given me the answers, life seems to come up with a few new questions.
And maybe that’s a good thing.
Because I’m still curious. Still changing my mind. Still trying things I’ve never tried before.
Apparently, I’m not finished yet. And I hope I never am. Follow along if you have no intention of being finished either.

We make decisions all day long.
Some barely matter. Others can change the direction of our lives.
Yet even the savviest women can find ourselves standing there… Metaphorically steering at vanilla and chocolate, wondering which one is the right choice.
Maybe it isn’t always in decision.
Maybe sometimes we already know what we want, but we’ve gotten very good at talking ourselves out of trusting it.
After 25 years of watching women shoes jewelry, I’ve seen that happen more times than I can count.
And occasionally, the answer really is two scoops.🍦 line what’s one simple decision you tend to overthink?

At 53, I thought success would be fairly easy to define.
25 years later, I’m not sure I define it quite the same way.
There were years when the business grew. Years when the world changed the rules. And years when simply figuring out the next step felt like an accomplishment.
But when my 53-year-old self asks the question that matters most, and we’re still doing this? The answer makes me smile.
We are and we still love it!
Follow along. Apparently, I’m still finding out what happens next.

At 19, I learned something that I was far too young to know: Joy and heartbreak don’t always wait their turn.
The day my 21 year-old brother was killed in a car accident was the day I had planned to announce my engagement.
My brother had tried hard to be the rock for our mother, my sister and me after our father died. He was on his way to Chicago to visit law schools when the accident happened. That day marked the beginning of a very different chapter of my life.
Later that year, I married my high school sweetheart.
Then life kept moving.
I began teaching while my husband went to law school. I added private tutoring after school. I was selected to help pilot an entirely new teaching model.
We were young, working hard and building our lives together.
But through those four years, I carried one decision I’d made on the day my brother died.
If my first child was a boy, he would carry my brother’s name.
In 1971 our first our first child was born.
And after four years that had begun with such profound loss, there was extraordinary joy.

Looking back, I don’t think the difficult chapters and the joyful ones existed separately in my life.
Perhaps that’s part of why I’ve always thrown myself so completely into the life in front of me.
At 78, I’m still doing that.❤️
Follow along. I still have so many chapters to share. StillBecoming

The only way I knew how to handle being terrified was to jump in anyway.
I was 15 when my widowed mother moved her three teenagers from the Chicago suburbs to Memphis.
I had already convinced myself that I would be different, that I wouldn’t fit in and that I might never find friends.
My first day of school didn’t help. The football coach jokingly called me a damn Yankee.
I went home, threw myself on my bed and sobbed.
But then I did what I’ve apparently done most of my life when I’m faced with something that scares me.
I got involved.
I made friends. I joined a high school sorority. I became VP, wrote a show and help plan the formal that went with it.
And somewhere along the way, that strange new place stopped feeling quite so strange.
Years later, I told one of those new Memphis friends how I had gone home crying after that first day.
She looked completely puzzled.
“Why did you do that? We really liked you.”
All that fear about a future I had imagined, and meanwhile, my new life was already beginning.
I sometimes wonder how much time we spend worrying about things that never happen.
At 78, i’m still inclined to jump in and find out.
Follow along. Apparently I’m not finished jumping in yet!😉

When I started my jewelry business in 2001, I never could have imagined the hurdles I would have over the next 25 years.
At the beginning, I only knew how to make bracelets. I took apart vintage necklaces, repurpose the beads and components, and figured out things as I went.
At the time, I was also selling a clothing line at home shows. The designer had asked me to help her choose fabrics, and one day, standing on a New York City St. corner, she gave me some very practical advice:
If I wanted to grow a jewelry business, I needed to learn how to make necklaces and earrings.
So I did.
That turned out to be pretty good preparation for the next 25 years.
I didn’t just have to learn how to make more jewelry, I had to learn how to keep a small business going while the world around it kept changing.
My Business made it through 911, the real estate meltdown, and Covid. I’ve outlasted stores I want Saul to and vendors I once depended upon. I’ve learned and relearned 25 years worth of technology I couldn’t possibly have imagined when I began.
There was never a Master plan.
I simply kept learning whatever came next.
I’ve always privately thought of myself as the little engine who could.
Apparently, she still chugging along.🚂
After 25 years, I still have so many stories to tell. Follow along.❤️

1. I told you earlier this week that I was an obedient overachiever.
The obedient part showed up in more places than I realized.
2. For years, I could turn the simplest choice into a debate with myself.
What was the sensible choice?
The practical choice?
The one I could justify?
Apparently simply wanting something wasn’t quite enough.
3. Somewhere along the way, that began to change.
After years of designing jewelry, and watching women make choices, I started paying more attention to that first instinctive response.
The one that happens before we begin talking ourselves out of it.
4. These days, I still appreciate practical.
I just don’t automatically give it the deciding vote.
Sometimes I know exactly what I want before my sensible side even finished making it case.
5. And occasionally, as you can see, the answer is very simple:
I want both🤩
May be confidence isn’t always about knowing more.
Sometimes it’s just simply trusting what you already know.
After all these years, I still have so many stories to tell. Follow along❤️ next line
