There seems to be superstition associated with this October birthstone, but if you like opal and unless you are superstitious I’d say wear this beautiful gemstone and “be not afraid.”
(........ from the Gemological Institute of America)
“Opal is considered an October birthstone. Some people think it’s unlucky for anyone born in another month to wear an opal. But that particular superstition comes from a novel written in the 1800s (Anne of Geierstein by Sir Walter Scott), and not from any ancient belief or experience.”
Opal is typically thought of as October's birthstone. Opal is found in a very wide mixture of coloration. Probably the most commonly referred to is the White opal, Black opal, Fire opal and Boulder opal, but another variety not as well known called Crystal (or Water) opal can be quite pretty with a clear or nearly transparent base. There is some superstition associated with opal, but according to the Gemological Institute of America .....
"Some people think it’s unlucky for anyone born in another month to wear an opal. But that particular superstition comes from a novel written in the 1800s (Anne of Geierstein by Sir Walter Scott), and not from any ancient belief or experience. In fact, throughout most of history, opal has been regarded as the luckiest and most magical of all gems because it can show all colors. Once, it was thought to have the power to preserve the life and color of blond hair." - www.gia.edu/opal-history-lore
Pink tourmaline is also widely used for October birthdays.
