This piece has a long story. Long being in it took over a year in the making. I guess some would call it creative Block but in reality it was more performance anxiety that got me on this one. This commission was from one of the owners of the flute company I work at during the day as a mold maker, caster. The stock they supplied me with consisted of 3 pieces of jewelry. 1st was an absolutely gorgeous aquamarine ring that was passed down to them.
2nd a diamond tennis bracelet.
3rd was a charm bracelet packed with a lifetimes worth of charms. Weighing close to 3 ounces of gold.

After little back and forth on design these were the parameters. Chunky, real Chunky, No prongs, bezel but not a thin bezel, stone perpendicular to finger, clean, contemporary, did I say Chunky. You can use a lot of the diamonds but not too many. Bling but not too blingy (I used only half). So now with the parameters in place it pretty much designed itself but here's kicker. As I imagined it, I got into my own head if I would I be able to pull it off what I was envisioning. Clean lines a row of flush set diamonds in line wrapping around middle of the band. High polished thick bezel while the wrap and sides with different matt finishes letting the diamonds pop. Then thought I was going to have to hammer set this thick bezel, next to this gorgeous stone that was passed down. Oh oh There it is was, stage set for the longest creative Block better known as performance anxiety I've ever experienced. Why? pretty straight forward ring. I was making this for the owner of my company, a world renowned professional level flute manufacturing company. Once I finished it, there's a pretty good chance it would be shown to every person I regard as the highest level craftsmen I know. I'm a mold maker caster during the day, definitely having it own set of skills but not so much the hand skills or craftsmen stuff. Now these folks that I look up to will be looking at my work. As coworkers and friends I know no one would really pick my work a part but to me it was one of those craftsmen to craftsmen thing.

The finished weight is tad over 1.5 ounces of 14k gold,
23, 5 point diamonds totaling 115tcw, 1 big absolutely beautiful Aquamarine. All the materials not used were returned for later projects.

I want to Thank and express how very grateful to my client for their understanding and unwavering patience for opportunity and freedom to create this piece. Thank You!

I started playing disc golf a year ago, lets just say I'm hooked. The game itself is great but the disc golf community is even better. Very shortly after being introduced to the game I found a newly formed local disc golf putting club called The Merrimack Valley Putting League or MVPL for short. One of the founders of MVPL is women named Dee Tripp. Dee's passion for growing the sport and the community is something I couldn't begin to put into words but I will say her energy and passion is contagious. Dee had a vision to host a women's only PDGA sanctioned tournament event at a local course. Dee doing what Dee does gathered many great folks in the community and after almost a year of planning made her vision of the biggest and best Women's Disc Golf tournament come to life! The reason I say contagious is watching Dee and her crew (wish I knew all their names, they definitely deserve big congratulations) work on this event had me wanting to do something, pitch in. So I am donating these Sterling Silver Disc pendant necklaces with Pink Stone signifying it as a throw pink event as 1st place prizes for each of the 12 divisions.

I dislike just throwing up few pics of my work on here without a story. Especially when the piece has a significant meaning that would be lost without it. When I’m asked to reproduce a lost piece, I'll ask if there's any pictures or if they can sketch a reference.

Unfortunately, this was one of the times when the picture I received from the client wasn't clear enough and, admittedly, the sketch only confused me more (we can laugh about that now). As we talked, it became very apparent the significance and meaning behind this symbol. This is one of the hardest aspects to pull off as a jeweler. Reproducing a piece from an image is fairly simple. Making a new piece that will hold the symbolic significance and hold the same emotional connection as the original, is not as simple. As the client and I talked, the meaning behind the symbol became clear, but the design wasn't coming to me. I had no idea how to proceed. During our time chatting, I realized we had a lot in common. As I continued to work on this piece, I began to feel my own deep connection to its meaning. The symbol represents life’s never ending ups and downs, big or small. No matter what happens, you have to keep moving because life doesn't stop moving. You can be on a peak one day, valley the next. Knowing a peak is coming when you're in a valley as long as you keep climbing is the key. Life keeps rolling along, so keep moving. Simple right?

So I carved an inverted mirroring of lifes peaks and valleys. Some big, some small. The mirroring is the other side, the other story, which is more of the same. Once that was done, it was time to decide how to hang it. Where does the bail go. As I held it, trying to decide, and kept spinning it over, there it was right there in front of me. This is life after all. It keeps moving, so let it roll. The center part spins, because life does.

You’ll be ok keep, just moving forward.

Side note: When the client and his wife came to pick it up, they had no idea I made the final piece able to spin. After he put it on, there were hugs and happiness abound. And I’m grateful to say we are now friends.

These are Herkimer Diamonds. They're actually not diamonds but are natural faceting double-terminated quartz crystals found in Herkimer County, New York. These were mined by my Customer and her daughter on there visit to the Herkimer mines. She wanted to make a special gift for her daughter to commemorate their mining experience. "I'd like a simple pair of silver rings, you can do what ever you see fit" I was finding it hard to pick a side or how I would set them to show most of the stone. Then I had an idea. They're naturally faceted to points on both ends. Could I get them to spin? Not as easy as I thought but YES!! They spin..

Most of my clients come without knowing what they really want as far as a design. They want something different, unique and a personal meaningful connection to the piece. They just dont have a clear vision to exactly what that design is. Finding that design and personal connection to making it theirs and only theirs is what I love most about creating jewelry. I've tried to build my business around that concept of "so you don't have a design, lets see if we can come up with a design by answering a few questions" This engagement ring is the epitome of this process. Do you have any old jewelry you'd like to upcycle? gold, stones? What do you both like to do? What does she like? Traditional on non traditional? Thick or thin? Symmetrical or asymmetrical? High polish, matte, textured? Setting low, high and so on. Eventually the story unfolds and a design emerges. He brought some various rings, chains and other jewelry to use. "We like to scuba dive and we love sea turtles. Something unique, asymmetrical, not thin, low setting so it doesn't catch on things, some texture some high polish". Ok... "So you have some sapphires, that could be ocean.. the Oval diamond could be a turtle back..Maybe a turtle coming from the beach (texture) into the ocean" .. that sounds perfect..

I was told when I started casting 30 years ago that you can cast anything organic, bugs, branches and such. Over the years I've tried several times with varied results. It never really worked out the way I expected and certainly hasn't been as "easy" as they said. Years ago when I lived on a boat I had an idea to cast seaweed and set sea glass in the casting. So i tried, boy did i try the failure rate was extremely high, especially on bigger pieces. They never came out as they went in. Out of the more than 20 attempts over the years only few even came close to being complete but still unusable. Frustration, high failure and I ran out of seaweed, on back burner it went. Then a few years ago a friend brought me a bag of seaweed and jar of sea glass, thanks Susan! I started again with unfortunately the same results. Small pieces had a better chance than bigger ones but bigger is what I wanted. Me being me if I think the idea is good i won't give up! This piece was no exception. It certainly didn't come out they it went in but I had enough pieces that did cast and with few cuts here some solder there and a little bending. This is the result, its the closest resemblance to what I imagined all those years ago...

I was brought an uncut aquamarine stone and asked if I could make a necklace that looked like a wave was holding it. Hand carved in wax then cast in sterling silver.
