"What is a VAM?"

This is a question we are often asked when people are looking at our Morgan and Peace Dollars.

A VAM number refers to the reference book The Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars written by A. George Malis and Leroy Van Allen. In this book Van Allen and Malis cataloged every known Morgan and Peace Dollar die pair and variety.

Although this means that ever Morgan and Peace dollars do have a VAM number there are several that are rarer or more sought after varieties that are known as the TOP 100. These (like the 1880 O "Hot Lips" variety shown below) can increase the cost of the dollar.

Collecting by VAM can bring a new level to your dollar collection beyond just collecting by Date and Mint Mark. If you would like to read more about VAM's visit VAM World, a free online resource.

Precious Metals Tip:

When buying jewelry always pay attention to the letters and numbers following the karat stamp.

An obscure one to keep an eye out for is an SF. This means Silver Filled. Silver filled following a gold designation (like in the example below it is following 14kt) means the item is Vermeil also known as gold plated silver.

If you see an SF following a 925 or Sterling designation it means the piece is silver plated with a base metal interior (usually copper or a nicke l compound).

As of May 1st, 2020 we are open for full business with the limited restrictions for Covid-19 security. Larimer County has requested that due to the size of the building we limit the number of customers in store, that all customers stay at least 6ft apart, and that a mask or cloth covering be worn within the building and outside the building if there is a line for entry. We will sanitize after every customer. To help keep us open and safe we ask that you follow these guidelines when entering the store. Thank you for your patience and we hope to see you all soon!
