In overdrive this wknd prepping for my first art show of the year. Oh man, the energy in this collection! People sometimes ask me what makes a bespoke piece different from just buying something off the shelf.

The short answer: Everything.

The longer answer: when you commission a piece from Arete Adorned, we start with a conversation. Not about what you want the ring to look like. About what you want it to mean. What you are marking. What you want to carry with you.

The design comes out of that. The stones come out of that. The finished piece comes out of that.

That is why Vaughn calls hers her power piece. That is why Becky said her stones could not have pegged her more perfectly. The jewelry already knew them because we talked first.

When I had my old wedding rings melted down, I saved the diamonds.
I didn’t know what they’d become. I just knew they deserved to be something better than what they were attached to.

This is what they became. The Alchemy Charm — oxidized sterling silver for the shadow work, 24k gold leaf for the light that comes after, and one of those diamonds set right into the surface for the clarity you earn on the other side.

When it started, I had weeks of projects in various stages of (in)completion. By the end, all was wrapped up and winging its way to London to be assessed.

This term of Diploma in Fine Jewellery was super challenging. But now I can make…
- carved wax pieces with embedded stones to cast in place
- creole hoop earrings
- tennis pendant (or earrings, or, if I’m really ambitious, a full bracelet)
- box clasp
- marquise engagement ring

We get a well-earned break and start the final term in a few weeks. Now time to get ready for summer shows!
