Last week, we welcomed the Merchandise and Marketing class from Johnson County Community College to the store.

The class asked many questions about how I learned the business, my definition of an apprenticeship, and my thoughts on jewelry as both an art form and a business. They wanted to know about the process of designing jewelry for a client, whether using the client’s existing jewelry or brand-new stones and metals, and how I go about it. I explained the steps involved: creating a design by computer or by drawing, refining it until it’s perfect for the client, then making a sample ring for the client to try on and approve before creating the final piece. They were excited about this approach and eager to learn how to get into the field.

They also asked about current trends for men’s and women’s jewelry. I responded that for men, silver chains with sterling symbols and high-end Swiss timepieces like Rolex watches are popular. For women, the multi-layered necklace look, with or without gemstones, continues to be in high demand. We discussed the time and dedication required to master gemstones, metals, and jewelry mechanics, which sets jewelry apart from other consumer products. Lastly, we looked at centuries-old jewelry craftsmanship compared to that of high-quality modern pieces, and they were fascinated by the fine metalwork from the Renaissance, which rivals even the most beautiful jewelry today.

This fun bracelet reminds me of the “slinky” toy children receive that jumps down the stairs. More seriously, its design originates in ancient Greece and Roman bracelets worn by affluent women from 500 BC forward. It is very light weight and comfortable against the skin. Its “lined” and partially brushed finish reflects lots of light.

Much old jewelry is sold through the refining of sterling silver, karat gold and platinum. To make certain you understand the commission you are being assessed, have your jewelerprovide you with a copy of the refining report he/she receives from the melting of your old metals. That report will contain the dollars being transferred to your jeweler, and then the money you receive will be that amount less the jeweler’s commission.
