COVERING ST. JOSEPH: The Route AC bridge over U.S. Route 36 near Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph is set to be replaced and widened under a project planned for 2027.

The bridge, which was built in 1973, is on the Missouri Department of Transportation’s statewide list of bridges in poor condition. Crews have completed multiple bridge deck repairs in recent years.

The Route AC bridge over U.S. Route 36 will be demolished and replaced. Route AC, also known as Riverside Road, and the surrounding interchange serve as a primary access route to Missouri Western State University for traffic traveling from northbound Interstate 29 and westbound U.S. Route 36.

Design plans call for the bridge to be widened to include two lanes of traffic in each direction, plus turn lanes for the entrance ramps to U.S. Route 36 on either side. A sidewalk will also be added on one side of the bridge.

The bridge will be closed throughout the duration of the project, and temporary closures of U.S. Route 36 under the bridge may be required. A detour will be in place.

The project also includes adding a raised median on Route AC between Outer Road and Delmar Way, including across the bridge. The exit ramp from eastbound U.S. Route 36 will also be widened to add a second left-turn lane.

Construction is estimated to cost about $9.2 million, according to MoDOT. A construction timeline will be announced after the project is awarded to a contractor in January 2027.

A public meeting was held on May 20 to gather public feedback on the plans.

People who missed the meeting can submit comments through June 3. Feedback can be submitted online or by mail.

PLATTE COUNTY – The Missouri Department of Transportation will CLOSE the ramp on Missouri Highway 152 eastbound to Interstate 29 southbound from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM on Tuesday, June 2, for lighting work.

Planned Roadwork for Northwest Missouri, June 1-7

St. Joseph, Mo. – The following is a list of general highway maintenance and construction work the Missouri Department of Transportation has planned in the Northwest Missouri region for the week of June 1-7.

There may be moving operations, such as mowing, brush cutting and litter removal, throughout the region in addition to the work mentioned below. Inclement weather may cause schedule changes in some of the planned work. Check the MoDOT Traveler Information Map at http://traveler.modot.org, or download the app for updated information.
