Update regarding warming centers.
I have been in contact with the Mayor, members of City Council, and other community partners as we work to offer as many options as possible. Thanks to all of those that have reached out to be a part of the solution to help keep our neighbors warm during this ongoing Code Blue.
Update from Mayor Schor's Office:
While we continue to have capacity in current facilities, throughout the week Mayor Andy Schor and members of his administration have spoken to the Lansing School District, several churches, and non-profits about their willingness to help as additional warming centers and expand our capacity across every area of the city through the weekend. We greatly appreciate the Women’s Center of Greater Lansing, who are working on a plan to open and take a limited number of people through this weekend. We also appreciate Union Missionary Baptist Church for opening to families, as well as the other churches and non-profits who continue to express interest. Facilities will be added to the City’s warming center list as they become available.
PLEASE NOTE: If you are willing to open as well, please contact [email protected] to start the process.
Mayor Schor and members of his administration have made calls and talked to several local government officials in the region. We will add any warming centers in other communities if they choose to open to the public. This is a regional problem and we need regional governments and regional non-profits, churches, and businesses to open up at night to help the unhoused or those without heat.
We continue to talk to interested parties and will provide more updates on additional locations as they are confirmed.
