What are Edison pearls?
The first time I came across these lovely beauties, I had to know more. New to the pearl market, Edison pearls are inspired by Thomas Edison and one of his famous quotes:
“There are two things which couldn’t be made at my laboratory — diamonds & pearls.”
Thanks to technology and innovation, the jewelry world has managed to create both. Edison pearls are named that to remind us that we are capable of achieving things that may seem impossible.
The pearls come from a Hyriopsis hybrid of mollusks, the Hyriopsis cumingi and Hyriopsis schlegeli. They were created just a few years ago by a family in China with over 40 years’ experience farming pearls. Most are round, or baroque shaped and typically range in size from 8mm to 14mm but can grow up to 17mm. The nacre, the substance secreted by mollusks that gives pearls it’s iridescent look, is thick (2 mm to 3.5mm).
Edison pearls come in a wide range of natural colors with a brilliant metallic luster. Edison’s white pearls rival the South Sea Pearl in their beauty, size, and whiteness, but they can also come in colors of lavender, dark purple, champagne, gold and pink. They are much more affordable than most other pearls and have a quality and appearance that make them extraordinary. These pearls come at price ranges to suit most and can be enjoyed by all.

About Tahitian Pearls
The Tahitian pearl is an organic gem formed from the black-lip pearl oyster (Pinctada margaritifera). Tahitian pearls are bead nucleated, meaning the farmer carefully inserts a round shell bead inside the oyster. The bead increases the chance that the pearl will be round, although only 10% of harvested pearls are perfectly round, they will also be near round or baroque shaped. They are among the largest pearls, ranging from 8mm to 18 mm. Not limited to their size, they offer a beautiful array of colors, the only pearls that have a full color spectrum. Often referred to as “black”, they offer a variety of colors, overtones and undertones of peacock, green, blue, silver, gold, pink, yellow and white; they are the only naturally “black” pearls, the black Akoya and freshwater pearls are dyed. These pearls are considered one of the most beautiful kinds of pearls in the world.
