Okay, confession time 🌿

I’ve been “experimenting” with using an old skirted oil lamp font as a propagation vessel for a maranta cutting, paired with one of my little wood oil lamp brackets (the wall shelf kind, with the cutout cradle that holds the font snug)… and I fell SO hard for how it turned out that this combo is officially not for sale. It found its forever home on my kitchen wall and I’m not sorry about it. 🤷‍♀️

The good news? I’ve got two beautiful pressed glass oil lamp fonts at the booth right now (no skirt on these, just gorgeous pressed detail on their own), each one already showcasing a little propagation of its own! One’s sitting up top on the display case… the other is hiding on the top interior shelf behind a little frog friend. 🐸 Think you can spot them both?

The skirted ones and the wood brackets are still at home with me for now, but keep an eye out — they WILL make their way to the booth soon. 👀

When boiling water outperforms a toothbrush AND Goo Gone… 😳🔥

I’d already spent time scrubbing these brass candlesticks with a toothbrush and tried Goo Gone on the spray paint — barely made a dent. Figured I’d try one more thing before giving up: a throwaway pot, a rolling boil, and about 15 minutes.

I was NOT expecting it to work this fast. The paint just… slid right off. 🤯 I’m still amazed.

Polish coming next, then these three are headed to the booth!

UPDATE: Two hours, one bottle of ketchup, a whole lotta Brasso, and more to go — but LOOK AT THIS SHINE. ✨

If you saw this morning’s post about the ketchup bath — this is what’s underneath all that tarnish. That dull, sad, “is-it-even-brass” trough is turning into pure gold right in front of me. Elbow grease, a little patience, and apparently a lot of stubbornness.

Not gonna lie, moments like this are exactly why I love this “job.” There’s something so satisfying about uncovering what a piece actually is under all the years of grime.

Still more to go, but I couldn’t not share this progress shot. 😍

Did I just use a whole bottle of ketchup? Why YES. I. DID. 🍅

Found this long oval brass trough at a booth sale — the tag just called it something like “metal oval container.” Not exactly a ringing endorsement! It was so tarnished I genuinely couldn’t tell if it was brass, copper, or just sad. Turns out ketchup is the secret weapon for cutting through decades of tarnish (the acid does the work, no elbow grease required… well, mostly). A few rounds of soaking and scrubbing later, and we’ve got confirmed BRASS, baby. 🎉

This guy is going to make a killer centerpiece planter or bar cart tray once he’s fully polished up. Stay tuned for the big reveal.

Moral of the story: never underestimate what’s hiding under fifty years of tarnish, and always keep an extra bottle of ketchup on hand for reasons that have nothing to do with fries. 🤣

Sometimes the best finds aren’t the big statement pieces — they’re a shoebox nobody bothered to dig through. 🧡

This little collection of mini oil lamps came home with us from last weekend’s adventure, and almost every one is different — hand-painted florals, cobalt blue glass, amber chimneys, one with a sweet little rose-and-ribbon trim. Just one matching pair in the whole bunch. Somebody collected these one at a time, over who knows how many years.

That’s the part of this job we never get tired of — the stories tucked into a pile nobody else stopped for.

More to come once these are cleaned up and ready for their close-up. 👀

So I rescued these candlesticks from the thrift store this last week and WHO hurt you, buddies?? 😭 Somebody looked at solid brass — SOLID. BRASS. — and thought “yep, brown paint, that’s the move.” The audacity.

Currently giving all three a spa day (aka a toothbrush and a lot of scrubbing) and slowly learning the ancient art of bringing these poor babies back to life. Every little gold peek-through feels like winning the lottery. 🏆✨

Breaking news from the second floor: I have entered The Howard Zone 🍎✨

For the uninitiated — “Howard” is what we call our upstairs storage room, which has evolved from “a little overflow space” into what can only be described as a full vintage yard sale that happens to be inside our own house. We don’t know how it happened. We don’t know how deep it goes. We just know that every trip up there ends with “wait, I FORGOT I HAD THIS.”

Today’s discovery: this absolutely stunning bronze apple with a brass leaf, sporting a patina so good it looks like it’s been aging in a museum basement instead of buried under God-knows-what in Howard. That soft powdery verdigris over the bronze, paired with the warm brass leaf still catching the light — chef’s kiss.

Some days my brain is loud. Anxious, overwhelmed, second-guessing every decision before I’ve even made it.

And then I sit down with a rag — mineral oil for the wood, Brasso for the brass — and something in me just… settles.

That little brass clawfoot tub? Buffed back to a glow that took my breath away. The carved “Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread” tray, that sweet carved bird — a little mineral oil and years of dullness just melt away.

And that pastel painting behind them? I grabbed it from a free pile at an auction a while back. It’s not really “restoration” — I’m not a conservator, I just gave it a good home and a little care instead of letting it get tossed. Something somebody else was done with, saved and made beautiful again.

Maybe it’s the control. Maybe it’s just having one small, tangible thing to focus on when everything else feels like too much. I don’t fully understand it, I just know I need it.

So if you ever wonder why I’m covered in oil rags and Brasso residue at 9pm instead of doing literally anything else on my list — that’s why. It’s not just a hobby. It’s how I breathe.

It’s about a thousand degrees here today 🥵 but somehow I’m sitting here styling little fall vignettes and feeling ALL the autumn vibes. Anyone else buying into a season before the weather’s ready to cooperate?

This sweet little farmhouse print is headed to the Etsy shop soon, those amber glass plates are already listed, and this pretty embroidered dresser scarf will be joining them too! Still trying to decide where this woven vase is going to land — booth or Etsy? Not sure yet.
