Ralph Lauren only designs watches he would want to wear. This is the 867 Square, which is very small by modern standards, only 27.5m to a side when most modern watches are at least 36mm across.

Ralph Lauren is a person of many paradoxes – a man whose career has spanned many decades; a man who almost single-handedly created a uniquely American, but also very cosmopolitan, design language rooted in an aspirational vision of European luxury and history; a man who has managed to absorb with eq...

Glass Watch Company - Prototype dial number 0
I've devised a new method of driving the indicator for the retrograde minutes register (the semicircle in the lower half of the dial) involving a sliding track and extra gears underneath the dial, though that might introduce too much friction into the system to be usable.

"...one of the most beautiful watches ever made."

I'm inclined to agree.

The word "badass" gets thrown around a lot these days (we know, because we're doing a lot of the throwing). However, if the shoe fits, wear it: this is, I'm pretty sure, the single most truly badass – in every way possible – personal daily wear wristwatch I've ever seen. This watch contains a tourbi...

I've been busy with life for most of these summer months, but I'd like to share this with you; it's too beautiful not to.

This is an A. Lange & Söhne and they make some of the most wonderful watches of the modern era. Completely functional, almost austere, in a way that only the Germans can express, while still being different and against all tradition. It's flashy, without being garish, and incorporates the absolute pinnacle of watchmaking design, bolstering the Swiss haut horlogerie image with German technological mastery.

This is another watch I hope to own one day.

(or heck, maybe even just have the chance to work on one.....)

While waiting on a mainspring to come in for the antique Elgin, I got a project from another coworker, a nice quartz watch that was his grandfather's, with original expansion band.

The best watchmaker in modern history, George Daniels. And here we have his amazing Space Travellers' Watch.

Not only was it made almost entirely by hand, it includes two different gear trains, one for traditional Solar time and the other for Sidereal Time, or time as measured against the stars. And they're both regulated by the same balance wheel. And there's a dial showing the Equation of Time, the difference between Solar and Sidereal time. And a million other fantastic details, like the first real innovation in watchmaking in over 300 years, Daniels' Co-axial escapement.

I could research this stuff for years.

The Space Travellers' Watch auction: https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/on-the-block-hands-on-with-the-george-daniels-space-travellers-pocket-watch-live-pics
It sold for 1,329,250 GBP, more than double the highest estimate.

On another simple battery change from a few days ago, it looked like some kind of insect had gotten into the watch and laid an egg sac. There was something soft and fluffy stuck to the hour hand and a very, very long white thread of something wrapped around the arbors of the watch hands. Very interesting.
