Melina Castro Jewelry We offer jewelry making classes on the Kalapana Coast near Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii. Lower Puna is the most rural part of the Big Island of Hawaii.

This is where my jewelry studio is located, on the skirts of the active Kilauea volcano. My main inspiration is the beauty of nature around me and the raw fierce sensuality of the flowing lava. I see them as mysterious and powerful, unapologetic and uncompromising in their creativity….traits that I embrace and strive for in my own work. I take photos of stumps, rocks, vines, roots, bark, and paint

peeling from an old wall. My personal favorite being the unusual textures and cracks on the hardened lava rock. I’m continually exploring ways to capture all of these in my jewelry to show others what I think is beautiful. Each piece of jewelry is crafted using a variety of hand tools and traditional silversmithing techniques such as hand sawing, piercing, riveting, stamping, soldering and forming. I love the richness of oxidized metals and the textures I achieve with an elaborate process called photo etching. With this process I can transfer my own photos into the metal. By layering silver, copper and brass, I can accomplish the contrast, color and texture I want. My work is characterized by its rustic-earthy look and its matte finish emulating a weather-worn appearance. Two spots just opened up for a Stacking Rings Workshop this Thursday, June 11.

This is a fun three hour workshop where you’ll create a set of three sterling silver stacking rings by hand using traditional silversmithing techniques.

You’ll choose from a variety of ring styles, and I’ll guide you step-by-step through the process. By the end of the class, you’ll leave wearing a stacking ring set that you crafted entirely yourself.

-No prior experience needed
-All materials and tools are included

Recap from today’s ring making class.

Alice and I have been talking about her taking one of my jewelry classes for years, and today we finally made it happen.

She has been such a big part of bringing this idea to life. She is always traveling, taking classes, and learning from local artists and artisans, and her perspective has meant a lot to me. Even though she’s only on the island for a few days visiting her dear friend and my mother-in-law, we managed to carve out the time to make rings together.

So grateful to have the opportunity to spend the day with you, Alice. Thanks for your visit and come back soon!
