The Fenelon Place Elevator in Dubuque—also known as the Fourth Street Elevator—is the world’s shortest and steepest scenic railway, and it packs a serious wow factor into a quick trip.

This historic cable car travels just 296 feet, lifting you nearly 200 feet up a bluff—and at the top? You’ll be treated to panoramic views of three states: Iowa, Illinois, and Wisconsin all at once.

Built in 1882 by a local banker who was tired of his long commute (honestly, relatable), this quirky ride has been rebuilt over the years but still delivers that same old-school charm. Today, it’s a cheap, quick, and incredibly scenic experience—just $4 round trip for adults (cash only!).

Pro tip: go at sunrise or sunset for next-level views (and photos that look straight-up unreal). It’s the kind of hidden gem that makes you wonder how more people don’t know about it.

To the untrained eye, Wisconsin may be seen as a land of cheese curds, beer, and bratwurst, but a closer look at the Badger State reveals a (figurative) gold mine of hidden gems waiting to be explored. Did you know Missouri is home to over 4,000 springs? 🌿💧 From the massive Big Spring that pours 250 million gallons of water a day into the Current River, to the crystal-clear Blue Spring, over 300 feet deep, these natural wonders are a feast for the eyes and soul.

Missouri’s springs aren’t just scenic — many have historic mills, trout-filled pools, and trails that take you deep into the Ozarks. 🎣🏞️

Maramec Spring Park: Fish for trout and explore museums right by the 96-million-gallon-per-day spring.

Bennett Spring: One of Missouri’s first state parks with a rainbow trout paradise.

Ha Ha Tonka Spring: A spring that feeds the Lake of the Ozarks with 48 million gallons daily, surrounded by bluffs, caves, and a historic castle.

Alley Spring: A picture-perfect spot next to a historic mill — ideal for photos and quiet moments.

Fun fact: Spring water stays around 56–58°F year-round thanks to the Earth’s natural insulation. That’s why these waters feel so refreshing in summer and icy in winter! ❄️☀️

Whether you’re after scenic photography, hiking, fishing, or just soaking in nature’s beauty, Missouri’s springs offer something for everyone. Grab your camera, lace up your boots, and discover the Show-Me State’s sparkling secrets.

Blink and you might miss it… but you definitely won’t miss the attractions.

Welcome to Casey, the self-proclaimed “Small Town with a Big Heart” — and home to more than two dozen world’s largest objects.

We’re talking:
🎶 A 54-foot-tall wind chime (with a 42-foot-long chime tube)
🪑 A 56-foot rocking chair that actually rocks
📬 A giant working mailbox you can climb inside to mail letters
⛳ A 30-foot golf tee and a 45-foot golf driver
🔑 A 28-foot replica of a work-truck key

Most of these massive creations were built by local businessman Jim Bolin starting in 2011 — and they’re open 24/7, completely free to explore.

But Casey didn’t stop at “world’s largest.” You’ll also find a giant taco, spinning top, birdcage you can sit inside, knitting needles, mousetrap, piggy bank, pencil, yardstick, rocking horse, and even a Poké Ball tucked inside a local shop.

With a population of around 2,400 and located just off I-70 about three hours from Chicago, this East Central Illinois town turned big dreams into even bigger roadside attractions.

If you love quirky photo ops, oddball Americana, and towns that fully commit to a theme — Casey absolutely measures up. 📏

From the shores of Lake Michigan to small-town Iowa, the Midwest is filled with architectural treasures designed by Frank Lloyd Wright — and many are open for tours. 🏡✨

Walk through his home and studio in Oak Park, stand beneath the sweeping rooflines of Frederick C. Robie House, or make the pilgrimage to Taliesin in Wisconsin to see Wright’s vision brought to life.

Explore the massive, pinwheel-designed Wingspread, tour the meticulously preserved Dana-Thomas House with its original art glass and furniture, or visit Michigan’s own Affleck House — Wright’s take on affordable Usonian living.

From 14,000-square-foot Prairie icons to the 880-square-foot Seth Peterson Cottage tucked into a wooded hillside, these homes showcase Wright’s genius at every scale.

Whether you’re an architecture buff or just love a beautifully designed space, these Midwest tours offer a rare chance to step inside one of America’s most revolutionary design legacies.

Step into a storybook landscape at the Garden of the Gods in Southern Illinois’ Shawnee National Forest. This stunning park spans over 3,300 acres of wilderness, where towering sandstone formations, panoramic overlooks, and winding trails make every step feel otherworldly.

You don’t need to be a hardcore hiker to enjoy it—the Observation Trail is just a quarter-mile and takes about 30 minutes, offering views of Camel Rock, Devil’s Smokestack, and other dramatic rock formations sculpted over thousands of years by wind and water. Adventurous visitors can explore longer trails, like the 1.6-mile Indian Point Trail, to wander through small caves, scenic bluffs, and quieter corners of the forest.

Fall and spring are especially magical here—vivid autumn leaves or the bloom of local flora frame the rocks in a kaleidoscope of color. Keep an eye out for the quirky details: a camel-shaped rock with a hidden monkey face or the unusual shapes of Mushroom Rock, Table Rock, and H-Rock.

Whether you’re seeking a peaceful escape, a photographer’s paradise, or a family-friendly hike, the Garden of the Gods is a place where the beauty of Southern Illinois geology and nature comes alive. Don’t forget your camera—and your sense of wonder.
