A pearl doesn’t start with beauty. It starts with irritation, an oyster responding to something that shouldn’t be there.

What follows takes months, sometimes years, of nacre building in microscopic layers with no guarantee it works. Most don’t. What you see in a jewelry case is the small fraction that survived the process at all.

So the real question isn’t how a pearl gets its shine. It’s what it had to endure to earn it.

On the runway, jewelry is designed to be seen. In real life, it has to be lived in. A necklace shifts, an earring moves, a gemstone catches different light depending on the moment, and none of that comes through in a still image.

The runway can define how jewelry is imagined, but it can’t define how jewelry lives.

The same piece can mean something entirely different depending on where it exists, and what changes usually isn’t the jewelry itself, it’s the context, the wearer, and the world around it.

A bridal set dripping in ceremonial gold carries generations of meaning in a way that a stacked necklace worn with a pinstripe corset top on a city street never will, and yet neither is more “real” than the other. Jewelry doesn’t lose its history when the context changes. It just gains another layer.

Long before gemstones became shorthand for luxury, jade occupied a completely different category, one that had less to do with sparkle and everything to do with meaning. In ancient China, jade wasn’t just beautiful, it was tied to virtue, integrity, and cosmic order, which is exactly why emperors commissioned it and why possessing it meant proximity to real political power. That’s also why people fought over it. Trade routes formed around rare jadeite, kingdoms sought control over its movement, and gifting it became a way of sealing alliances that had nothing to do with fashion.

What makes jade unusual is that it never fully let go of that weight. Families still pass jade down across generations, and for younger generations navigating identity across cultures, wearing it today isn’t nostalgia, it’s continuity. Jackson Wang layering jade with modern gold chains isn’t a rejection of heritage, it’s proof the meaning is still alive.

Jade was never simply a stone. It’s been currency, protection, inheritance, and identity, sometimes all at once. And maybe that’s exactly why it still holds power now.

Ask someone to describe a pearl and they’ll probably say shiny, pretty, maybe round. But in Hyderabad, under the Nizams, a pearl was never just a gem, it was a sentence in a language the entire court understood without a word being spoken. The number of strands in a bride’s necklace signaled how seriously her family took the match. A gift of pearls from the Nizam told a visiting dignitary he’d been folded into the inner circle. Even the placement of pearls on a sherwani ranked a courtier’s standing before he said a single thing.

Basra pearls turned a landlocked city into “the City of Pearls,” and when set alongside Golconda diamonds and Colombian emeralds, they became miniature maps of the Nizam’s reach and power.

So no, pearls were never just pretty. They were how rulers displayed power, how families measured commitment, and how a city announced its place in the world.

Most people think they understand the 4Cs because they know the letters, but knowing cut, color, clarity, and carat isn’t the same as understanding how they actually work together.

A smaller diamond with an exceptional cut can genuinely outshine a larger one with poor proportions, because brilliance comes from how a stone handles light, not just how much it weighs. And that’s really the part that gets lost: the 4Cs aren’t a checklist where higher always wins, they’re a balance that only makes sense once you see how each factor shapes the others.

Jewelry stopped playing supporting actor a long time ago.

At the Met Gala, it doesn’t complement the look, it becomes the reason the look gets remembered.

Some nights, the outfit is just the frame.

What Taylor Swift’s ring actually signals isn’t just a style preference, it’s a shift in what people want jewelry to mean. Personal over conventional. Story over status.

We broke it all down in our latest editorial. Read the full piece through the link in our bio →
