That first coin is a 1907 High Relief $20 gold piece. Designed by Agustus Saint-Gaudens, the first of these were more like MEDALS than coins. The design was so deep and detailed, that the coins had to be struck multiple times to bring all the details out in the finished product; the coins would not even STACK because the relief was so high. Only a little over 12000 of these were minted before the dies were altered to make the coins easier to strike, and easier to manage as coins. Its funny to think about, but despite the low mintage, we have probably owned at least 12-15 of these over the years. The other photo is simply a gold type set. One of each of the regular issue gold coins minted in the US. You never know what will walk in our doors after twenty years!
