That first coin is a 1907 High Relief $20 gold piece. Designed by Agustus Saint-Gaudens, the first of these were more like MEDALS than coins. The design was so deep and detailed, that the coins had to be struck multiple times to bring all the details out in the finished product; the coins would not even STACK because the relief was so high. Only a little over 12000 of these were minted before the dies were altered to make the coins easier to strike, and easier to manage as coins. Its funny to think about, but despite the low mintage, we have probably owned at least 12-15 of these over the years. The other photo is simply a gold type set. One of each of the regular issue gold coins minted in the US. You never know what will walk in our doors after twenty years! Its NEVER fun to tell people what they do not want to hear. I gave a man a price on several baggies of coin silver, and he said we'd offered him way more MANY years ago. Well, further discussion revealed he was here to see us back in 2011. Its a common misconception that things ALWAYS get more valuable as time passes. When he was last here, silver was THIRTY DOLLARS MORE per troy ounce than it is today!! We always HOPE things will be worth more later, but sometimes, its LESS. I wish I could have had better news for him, but as I often say, we do not SET the market here, we can only OBEY it. When is a nickel NOT five cents? Actually our FIRST "Nickel" wasn't five cents, it was three cents. Also, our first five cent piece wasn't a nickel, it was a "Half Dime." "Nickel" refers to the metal content, not the denomination. The first US "Nickel" was the 1865 three cent nickel, while the first five cent piece was the 1794 "half dime." The 1792 Half Disme was "proposed coinage," not regular issue. No, the "Shield nickel" wasn't the first "nickel." It was not minted until 1866. So, our first nickel wasn't five cents and our first five cents wash't a nickel! 3CN on right, half dime on left. As most Ohioans already know a "Stay at home" order goes into effect in Ohio tonight at 11:59pm. Nonessential businesses and travel are prohibited. Obviously essential business and travel is permitted. Section 12 i of this order lists "essential businesses," "including but not limited to...pawnbrokers...appraisers...trading and futures exchanges...and institutions selling financial products." As a State of Ohio Licensed Precious Metals dealer we will continue limited operations during this closure. We will not be open to walk-in traffic. We ask that persons who need to conduct precious metals or related business call either our Hyde Park or Fairfield store(numbers below), and speak with one of the two owners. Myself and my partner will conduct all appointments on a scheduled, one on one basis, and only one client will be in the store at a time. During this business we will observe social distancing guidelines strictly. We are also complying with disinfecting guidelines between appointments. You will not see our "OPEN" signs on until this order is lifted. It is then that we hope to return to our "open hours" operation. Until then we are limiting all our activities to the essential, and we strongly encourage everyone else to as well. We will be striving to provide as much information via telephone and text as we can, so feel free to call. If you need an appointment, we WILL do our very best to accommodate you in a timely fashion. We are monitoring voicemail and returning calls as we can. FAIRFIELD: 513-892-2723 HYDE PARK: 513-731-1700 www.mainstreetcoin.com

People keep asking me "How can precious metals go DOWN while the DOW drops like a rock?" Listen, I am really not an expert in the market factors that impact these prices. What I do know is the prices I see posted for gold and silver DO NOT reflect my ease of access to it, nor the demand I see for it. Right now the economies of major nations need their people to have and SPEND MONEY. Billions are being pulled from the stock markets around the world, and when those pulling those funds look for a place to put that money they see GOLD in the RED and SILVER in the RED. Suddenly those options look like an UNSAFE place to put these funds. If people pull money and have it in cash in the bank they are more likely to spend it than they would be if they sunk it into precious metals. So is it possible the world's major economies have agreed that posting increasing precious metals numbers is simply not the best thing for those economies as a whole? Can they control the number we see on the commodities exchanges? Sure, thats possible, and ANY number you see on a screen was typed in by a person, or software designed by a person, so OF COURSE that is possible. I can tell you that I am experiencing increased difficulty replacing gold and silver, and I am seeing my costs in relation to the prices displayed INCREASE. So whether its a grand conspiracy or a fluke, I cannot blame ANYONE if they choose to HOLD their gold and silver right now, as well as buy more if they can. SEVERAL people have asked me why metals are DOWN when the stock market is TANKING. Let me be clear, I am not an expert in these matters. What I do know is MOST "Gold and silver" that is "owned" is on paper, just like a stock. I imagine that has some initial impact when the markets drop this sharply, but mark my words, if the stock selloff continues, metals are going to increase MASSIVELY. I have heard that metals are being pushed down artificially to prevent people seeing them as a safe haven; WHATEVER is causing it, it is TEMPORARY. If stocks continue down, METALS WILL RISE, and RISE DRASTICALLY. This is a TEMPORARY situation, just wait and see. You do not need to study coins long to realize that in 1916 SOMETHING happened. Look up the "Barber" dime, quarter and half. Then look up the Mercury Dime, Walking Liberty Half, and the Standing Liberty Quarter (SLQ). 1916 marked a MAJOR transition in coin designs here in the US. The SLQ may well be the most attractive coin the US Mint ever produced, and it is CERTAINLY among my top three in terms of attractiveness. In 2016 the US Mint produced a 100th anniversary edition of the SLQ, in pure gold. This is a US Quarter Dollar, but it just happens to be made of 1/4 ozt fine gold. I really believe the US Mint is OVER-producing. They are making TOO MUCH, and I believe coin collecting has, and will, suffer from that. However, now and then they make one I just cannot complain about :) If you have coins, paper money, gold, or silver of any type you'd like to have appraised, or you want to sell, feel free to call us: 513--892-2723 or 513-731-1700 www.mainstreetcoin.com

Yesterday a customer asked me: "What do you think of cryptocurrency as a commodity or form of money?" My answer: First off I DO understand it conceptually, and therefore I LOVE it! HOWEVER, I also understand from direct experience being regulated as a financial institution, this is a direct threat to the third party that is removed from financial transactions. Given the nature of that third party, I cannot see it EVER allowing itself to be removed in any big way. That third party makes and enforces the rules, and it has nearly UNLIMITED POWER to influence and impact those who use this. SO for ME, no I cannot see it being allowed; but I DO like it as a concept. I LOVE the sound of silver coin going through the counter. The difference is subtle, but in two decades of doing this, I can absolutely distinguish between silver and non-silver coins being counted.
