As your County Executive, the safety of our families is my number one priority. In the cold winter months, I know many of us look for ways to keep our homes warm while keeping costs down. However, recent events have reminded us that while the cost of a space heater might be low, the stakes are incredibly high.
On New Year’s Day, we saw a heartbreaking tragedy right here in Hyde Park. A devastating fire at the historic Crumwold Estate, home to the Millennial Kingdom Family Church, was caused by a space heater. While we are profoundly grateful that all 11 residents and first responders are safe, a piece of our history was lost and people were displaced.
Space heaters are a leading cause of home fires during the winter. They are designed for supplemental warmth, not as a primary heat source. If you must use one, please follow these life-saving rules:
• The 3-Foot Rule: Keep anything that can burn; blankets, curtains, paper, or furniture, at least three feet away from the heater.
• Plug it Straight into the Wall: Never use an extension cord or power strip. These can overheat and cause a fire.
• Never Leave it Unattended: Turn heaters off when you leave the room or go to sleep.
• Level Ground: Place the heater on a flat, hard, non-flammable surface (never on carpets or furniture).
Saving a few dollars on a heating bill is never worth the risk of losing everything. Please check your smoke detectors today and talk to your family about a fire safety plan
