Founded in 2002, Ornamentum Gallery exhibits a dynamic collection of contemporary jewelry as well as related objects and artworks. Ornamentum hosts numerous exhibitions yearly in their recently expanded Hudson, NY exhibition space - one of the world’s largest gallery spaces dedicated specifically to contemporary jewelry - where featured designers display their work in conceptual installations. First Impression: The title of Haener’s bedazzling series makes a fitting name for Haener’s first exhibition at Ornamentum!

Winner of the 2026 Swiss Design Award, following his receiving of the Art Jewelry Forum’s Young Artist Award, Ornamentum will debut the magnificent work of Luzern based Benedict Haener on July 25.
Haaener’s First Impression series, finds the Swiss artist hammering diamonds into highly recognizable traditional jewelry forms of aluminum, leaving only their impressions and reflections. Only upon close inspection does one realize that the value is in concept rather than materiality. In Haener’s Sugar Free series, jewelry appears to be crafted of candy, the sugary surface however, is composed of glass and diamonds.
From the Swiss Design Awards: “Diamonds, gold, sapphires, pearls: the collection takes materials we traditionally associate with jewellery and presents them in a new and surprising way. Familiar everyday items like sour sweets, sugar cubes and sandpaper are creatively “transvalued”. They remain recognisable for what they are, but the use of materials such as diamonds and precious stones and metals suddenly turns them into expensive pieces of jewellery. The puzzlement this causes makes us reflect on the value of luxury goods”

Exhibition Event

Join artist Samuel Gassman and Barbara Paris Gifford, Senior Curator at the Museum of Arts & Design, for a conversation exploring the historical jewels, artifacts, and objects that shape Gassman’s contemporary practice.

A noted antiquarian and expert in historic jewelry, Gassman currently has work on view in several museum exhibitions, including OUT of the Jewelry Box at the Museum of Arts & Design and the traveling exhibition Constellations: Contemporary Jewelry, organized by the Dallas Museum of Art. His expertise has also been sought by film and television productions, including HBO’s John Adams, where he consulted on period jewelry and costume.

Gifford will lead Gassman in a deep dive into the historical materials that inform his work, and how they are reconfigured into functional art and layered assemblages, with numerous examples from his collection on show during the event.

On this Independence day, we thought we would take an in-depth look at the incredible Jewel 101 by Samuel Gassman. The box form is based on George Washington’s American Revolution encampment tent which still exists. Epaulets, for context, are clothing worn on military uniforms to display rank. Some of the elements in the work are Odd fellow badge remnants, disassembled jewelry, and the fabrics are table cloth fragments and religious vestments. The piece is an homage on Baron Von Steuben an openly gay father of the American military.

The epaulets are adorned with tassels containing snippets of historical love letters and odd, vaguely sexual quotes on the back. The front sides with the text “Member”. To open the box, the linen straps must be delicately unbuttoned, like un******ng. The necklace can be worn alone, or together with the epaulets as in the photo.

Opening during Upstate Art Weekend, Ornamentum Gallery is pleased to present
The Remains of the Gay, an exhibition of new work by Sam Gassman.
On view are hand-sewn flags, Rag Jewels, and a new series of antique jewel assemblages. In Gassman’s work each element is selected based on its saturated history and recontextualized to create meaning. Exploring the detritus of empire, Gassman gathers objects charged with the politics and labor of how they were made and for whom. The resulting assemblage converges hundreds of years of precious remnants together with the ordinary, repurposed to the desires of a new day.

‘Cardboard Crucifix’ and ‘Little Snail’ brooch by David Bielander

Winner of many awards including Switzerland’s highest design prize, Bielander’s Cardboard series- hand fabricated in silver and/ or gold, is one of the most iconic contemporary jewelry concepts of the early 21’st Century.

For the Summer Selection, we exhibited a new Snail brooch together with Bielander’s wall-hanging Crucifix.

The retina is a thin membrane at the back of the eye, the place where the image of the world is first formed. Here, light is never preserved as it is. Countless photoreceptors receive, fragment, transform, and reassemble it̶only then do we experience the act of seeing. The retina is not merely a receptor; it is a device that rewrites the world.
Holon Retina is an attempt to materialize the transparent membrane that exists between seeing and being seen - its permeability and invisibility made tangible as a physical substance.

Holon Retina mesmerizes the viewer while playing with depth perception, it can be configured to any wall size or shape, lending itself to commissions for any architectural space.

‘Walgreens’ necklace by Bobby Dues

We were thrilled to exhibit a handbag and an ‘Instagram Verified Check’ bolo tie at Design Miami to broad acclaim and both sold in the first hours of the fair. Walgreens wasn’t finished in time for the opening of the fair but we have it displayed beautifully in the Ornamentum Summer Selection Show.

Bobby “Dues” Wilson is a Sisseton-Wahpeton Dakota actor, writer, poet, visual artist, and comedian. Wilson is known as one of the founding members of Indian Sketch Comedy group The 1491s and a writer (and occasional actor) for the Emmy nominated television series Reservation Dogs.
Bobby’s tongue in cheek humor mixes with traditional Native American beadwork in jewelry that offers social commentary on the generic physical and social landscapes of the USA.

“The blue tapestries refer to nature as a healer and draws you into a state of
calmness mimicking water surfaces. I want to evokes the feeling of looking at
moving water reflecting light.”
“The tapestries serve as personal confessions of a repetitive everyday life, filled with
monotonous days and nights while providing for two young children. For me they represent
the experience of motherhood as a practicing maker and the effort behind the repetition of
maternal duties and them of artistic creation. I like many women before me made a choice
to work with textiles as an easily accessible medium and tool of expression within my home
environment. Each sequin of the embroidery is meticulously cut out of wood, hand-formed,
painted with linseed oil-based colors in various tones of blues, and stitched onto linen
fabric.”
