I figured it would be a good time to address a few frequent questions I’ve been asked.
1. Do you use metal with nickel or other metals that will turn my ears green?
A. No I do not use metals that have a tenancy to give reactions. I only use stainless steel, sterling silver, solid gold, gold plated, and gold filled.
2. Why does your jewelry cost so much?
A. I price my jewelry based on the cost of materials(which is expensive), time it takes to complete the project, and complexity of the jewelry that you want. Some projects take 5 minutes, others take multiple days/hours to complete.
3. Do you make all of the jewelry you sell?
A. 90% of the jewelry I sell I make, the other 10% is high quality jewelry that has stones already set into the prong or bezel setting, or high quality chains and pendants, eventually I would love to be able to get the equipment to do that myself, but I do not have the space for anymore equipment.
4. Why make jewelry when you can get it cheap off Temu or Amazon and just resell?
A. I like creating the jewelry because I know my jewelry will last based on quality of materials I use, certain techniques I use, and it keeps me connected to my indigenous culture, and it’s very rewarding to be able to look at something you made and be proud of it. If you buy from Amazon or Temu, you’re getting jewelry that is mass produced in a factory where they steal designs from real people to make the jewelry, it’s not good quality, and they will break easier and faster than jewelry made by someone that uses high quality beads, string, and metals. If you buy from small businesses you’re likely helping someone put food on the table for their family, or even sometimes just helping them get through another day.
5. Why do you spend all that time making jewelry?
A. It’s a good way of keeping my mind and hands busy, it’s helped immensely with my mental health. It helps to keep the creativity flowing in my brain. There are endless things you can make with a couple tubes of beads, some thread, a needle, and a couple earring hooks.
5. Why do you have so many different kinds of materials?
A. I have a variety of different materials for different projects, certain size beads need certain size needles and thread. If someone wants a certain project done, whether that be bracelets, earrings, necklaces, or just some cool little thing to have sitting on a desk or hung on a wall, I also like to challenge myself and broaden my skills with working with a bunch of different materials because I have fun with it, I like learning new skills, and techniques, and at the end of the day I will never get bored because I have multiple different options and I can just rotate through all of them, and I do. 😂
6. Do you do all of this by yourself?
A. 95% of the time yes, the other 5% is spent creating things with my nieces, they make all of the beaded pens, and some of the bracelets and earrings. For only being 3 and 5, they do a great job, they learn new things with me, they ask questions, and if I’m working on my own project, they can work on the pens etc.. along side me. Yes they make a mess of the beads and I have more bead soup than anyone could ever want but it makes for good memories and they have fun and enjoy crafting with me.
