In progress, working on a design using 39 diamonds belonging to a client from family rings that mean so much. I cannot wait until the finished piece is on her finger. She deserves the best we can give.

Fancy shapes are not graded for cut like round brilliants.

Fancy shapes are not graded for cut like round brilliants.

All diamond cuts besides round brilliants are considered fancy cuts. The appearance of a fancy cut is determined by both the shape and cutting style; they do not receive cut grades from GIA. Keep these tips in mind when choosing your next fancy cut diamond! 💎

- The shape refers to the stone’s face-up outline, whereas the cut refers to the facets’ arrangement.
- Among rectangular or square shaped diamonds, those with step cuts - such as emerald or Asscher cuts - are known for their elegant gleam, whereas
- Brilliant cuts - such as the pear brilliant and the princess cut- are known for their sparkle.
- Elongated shapes such as the emerald cuts, marquises and ovals can flatter fingers to make them look more slender.

Understanding fluorescence

Understanding fluorescence

Roughly 30% of diamonds fluoresce under longwave ultraviolet (UV) light. Does fluorescence impact diamond appearance?

Here’s what to know:
- For diamonds that fluoresce, 95% fluoresce blue. Lower-color natural diamonds commonly have a yellow hue; those with strong or very strong blue fluorescence may appear more colorless under UV-containing sunlight. The reverse effect may be observed under reduced UV environments such as office lighting.
- In rare cases (less than 0.2% of fluorescent diamonds), diamonds with extremely strong fluorescence combined with certain nanoinclusions may appear hazy or oily. Strong fluorescence by itself does not cause haziness.
- Many other factors influence diamond color more than fluorescence. These include diamond shape and cut, the light the diamond is viewed under and environmental colors, such as the wearer’s clothing or jewelry setting.

The appearance of most diamonds is unaffected by fluorescence. Its presence is typically viewed as a characteristic rather than a flaw.
