The Big Find. In October of 1972, one the most significant discoveries of tourmaline in North American history was found in an abandoned mine on Plumbago Mountain in Newry, Maine. Yielding over one ton of tourmaline crystals in every colour, this has simply been called "The Big Find." How apt that it was discovered in October, since tourmaline is one of October’s birthstones!

The Maine Mineral & Gem Museum is commemorating the anniversary of The Big Find with special tourmaline exhibits and guest lectures all year. Several Maine tourmaline carvings on loan from the GIA Museum are included. Soon, twelve one-of-a-kind pieces of jewelry showcasing the historic Maine tourmalines seen in this image will be revealed. The jewelry will also be displayed at the Tucson Gem & Mineral Show next year before being auctioned. How wonderful for the mine and the sellers. News like this bring visions of dollar signs amongst investors and buyers. But remember that stones of such value make the news because they are "rare". When you go for a buy be happy if you get a decent volume of 1.5 ct and above of great quality!

The gem was sold on tender for $11,267 per carat.
