ROCK OF THE WEEK: COPROLITE!
Yep. It’s fossilized p**p.
Long before humans were around, ancient animals were doing what animals still do today, eating, digesting, and leaving things behind. Under the right conditions, some of those droppings were buried and preserved long enough to become fossils called coprolites.
Coprolites can give paleontologists clues about ancient diets and ecosystems. Some contain recognizable remains such as tiny pieces of bone, scales, shells, or plant material, basically little snapshots of what an animal ate millions of years ago.
The word coprolite comes from Greek words meaning “dung” and “stone.”
So yes… scientists really do study prehistoric p**p. And honestly, we think that’s pretty awesome. 💩
Come check out our coprolites at Rockhoppers, because sometimes the coolest fossils are also the grossest!
