COVID-19 update
We regret informing our clients that we will be closed and work only by appointment until further notice while we receive clear information on how we are supposed to proceed with respect to the COVID-19 outbreak. At this time we could operate in ignorance and the hope that we do not contribute negatively to this pandemic, but we do not want to put any of our family, friends, and clients at further risk. As a small business, we rely solely on our business to provide for us, so it is with great reluctance that we make this decision. Again, our sincere apologies. The safety and well-being of our communities we serve remains our top priority, and our thoughts are with those who are being impacted by this global epidemic. We will provide an update when we have clear direction. Please do not hesitate to call or email us for additional information. Thank you all so much and God Bless!

Would you like to know how a mechanical watch is made & what Ebauche, Cyclops or Mainspring means? Then you must read our Watch Parts Glossary

01/07/2020

The idea sprouted some 40 years ago in the genius mind of a British master craftsman, who worked his way up to become one of the greatest watchmakers of the 20th century. "DO I NEED TO WIND MY AUTOMATIC (SELF-WINDING) WATCH?
Mechanical watches with automatic movements have a spring that is wound by the normal, daily motion of the wearer's arm. The arm movement causes a rotor inside the watch to transmit motion (energy) to the barrel, thus winding the mainspring.

An important feature of every automatic watch is its "power reserve" – the amount of time it can remain idle before the mainspring uncoils and the movement runs out of power. If the power reserve is exhausted because the watch has not been worn for an extended period of time, you can wind the movement by hand (approximately 20 turns of the crown) to create an initial power reserve – but to maintain the power reserve, the watch must be worn continuously and actively. If you plan on wearing your watch daily, you may want to manually wind it once every two weeks to keep the wheels in motion and the oil from drying out. If you do not plan on wearing it daily, we advise you to wind the watch about three times a week to ensure continuous operation. Finally, if you do not wear your automatic watch daily, you may want to use a winding box. This box mimics the natural motion of your arm to keep your automatic watch running.

In contrast, a watch with a "manual" mechanical movement must be hand-wound daily by turning the crown to ensure its continuous operation – and if it stops, it must be wound by hand." movado. com
