Lunacy Beading

Lunacy Beading I use elements rarely used in jewelry. I'm happy when people say they've never seen anything like it. I shop in antique stores for the buttons.

I make jewelry using unusual elements including antique buttons, mechanical watch parts, Devonian fossils, Herkimer diamonds, jewel beetles, and more. I dig at Penn Dixie Fossil Park and various Herkimer diamond sites. I search along the shores of Lake Ontario and Lake Champlain for interesting stones, glass and found objects. My jewelry is not like any you've seen before.

I adore these vintage green glass buttons. They are likely made from depression glass in the 1930s. The antique store I got them at in Ithaca had more. Hmmm. I might have to go back...

I've always had a dalliance with astronomy, even as a young kid. My Dad taught me how to take star trail pictures, I slept in my backyard under the stars and sought out the constellations. I went to the planetarium as often as I could and couldn't wait to see my first comet (thanks Comet Hyakutake!). Now, I have designed some new pendants made with the filings from a meteorite. They include peridot as this is the most evident gemstone found in meteorites. Alas, my peridot is from earth, but they are joined by metallic meteorite dust - actual stardust!

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT Lunacy Beading

Diane Brown-Steiner of Lunacy Beading creates jewelry with unusual elements. She seeks various sources for antique buttons, escutcheons, keys, antique lace. She has up-cycled her grandmother’s blue willow china, saving it from the trash. Disassembled old mechanical watches reveal beautiful gears, cogs and impossibly small screws to use for Frozen Time Pieces. Her beadwork uses a crazy number of beads. She loves experimenting with natural elements. One might find fossils or Herkimer Diamonds she hunts in New York State, or even Asian Jewel Beetle wings. Lately, she has been successfully experimenting with stained glass and beads to make mosaic pendants.

February was rough on me (still recovering!) and I didn't get these into a store before Valentine's Day. I've been experimenting with incorporating antique lace into my work, and I like how these turned out. The centerpiece is, I believe, bobbin lace, but I'm no expert. It was cut from a larger piece purchased at an antique store.
