When your love runs ocean deep 🐚 🌊 💙 🩵 💚

Soon-to-be bride and groom Gray and Caleb didn’t just design an engagement ring—they designed the whole story together.

Working with May and Bon, they chose a dreamy mix of blue-green sapphires in hexagons, baguettes and rounds, then brought them together in a custom seashell-inspired engagement ring with complementary wedding bands designed right alongside it.

Different shapes. An array of color. Three rings made to belong together—just like Gray and Caleb. We love love. But we especially love when couples make the design process part of their story 💍

Add some fun to your jewelry 🤎

Our client had several beautiful pieces that she wanted to combine into one piece of jewelry that she could wear multiple ways. Tiffany and Cameron did just that, incorporating rose gold and diamond jewelry with the brown diamond bead strand.

Now our client can wear her new necklace with just the brown diamonds showing in the front at two different lengths, as a Y-necklace with the rose gold elements in the front, or at the longer length with the rose parts in the front.

Want to modify one of your existing pieces? Reach out to us and we'll give it a fresh new look 🔗

Some like it hot. We prefer it hot pink 💗🔥

Think September sapphire has to be blue? Think again. Our gemologist Katherine is showing off the bolder side of September’s birthstone with this hot pink sapphire.

Just over ¾ carat with a round-faceted crown and step-cut pavilion, this little beauty knows how to work the light ✨

Because even a classic deserves to break the rules sometimes 💗

50 Things We Love About Jewelsmith 💖 #1 + #2: The Stories and People

This is why we do what we do ❤️

When Doug and Magda married 40 years ago, simple hammered gold bands were all they could afford. Magda had always dreamed of a diamond ring.

Years later, she found a silver solitaire she loved. Doug brought her to Jewelsmith under the guise of a “cleaning”—then surprised her by helping her choose a gold setting for her diamond.

On their 40th anniversary, Magda finally got the ring she’d always wanted. 💍

Sadly, she passed away earlier this year. But Doug told us she proudly showed off that ring every chance she got 🥹

50 years of Jewelsmith means 50 years of being part of stories like theirs.

And that will always be one of the things we love most ❤️

Join us in celebrating our golden era and sharing the joys of being Durham's jeweler for 50 years!

Not a bot, but definitely a BOP 🤖❌🎶

Around here, the intelligence is very real and so are the people. At Jewelsmith, the human touch starts long before we get to the jeweler’s bench.

You text? Human.
You call? Human.
You design with us? Human.
You get an incredible piece of jewelry? Also human.

No bots. No mass-produced mentality. Just real people, real conversations, real hands, and 50 years of making jewelry using ancient and modern techniques.

Originality and genuine connection can’t be automated. And yes, THAT’S a BOP.

3 gems, 2 generations, 1 gorgeous ring 💎✨

Lauren inherited two Old European Cut diamonds from her grandmother and remembered her wearing them in a 3-stone ring. When it came time to create a ring of her own, she wanted to honor that memory without simply recreating the past.

So she added something new: a beautiful oval diamond for the center, bringing three stones and two generations together in a modern floating bezel setting.

The result? A ring that feels completely Lauren, while keeping a little piece of her grandmother close. 🤍 And it couldn’t have found a more fitting next chapter: Lauren and Ben were married right here in Durham The Durham Hotel.

That’s what we love about a jewelry makeover. You don’t have to choose between "old and new." Sometimes the most meaningful pieces are made from both.

Phil loves to wax poetic 🕯️✨

Give Phil a blank wax tube and lock in. No CAD. No computer. Just a few hand tools, decades of experience, and a wild imagination.

This is hand-carved wax, one of the traditional ways fine jewelry begins. Phil carves directly into the wax — shaping, sculpting, refining, and sometimes changing course as the design reveals itself. Once the wax model is complete, it can be cast into precious metal using the lost-wax casting process, transforming a wax sculpture into a wearable piece of art.

Look around our cases and you’ll spot plenty of Phil’s imagination brought to life, including our “Blue Candy” sapphire ring and 50th anniversary “Kissing Ring.” You might even catch one on the hand of a Jewelsmith designer 😍

In this video, you can see where it all starts: a simple tube of wax. It’s pretty remarkable to think that something so unassuming can eventually become gold or platinum, set with beautiful gemstones, and find its forever home on someone’s hand.

From wax tube to wearable art. That’s part of our Jewelsmith magic ✨

What’s better than one brooch? Three, obviously 👀

Brooches are officially having a moment and we’re here for it. But for us and our client, they’ve never gone out of style. He's a true brooch aficionado, so we had to meet the fashion design challenge: create a trio around antique-cut diamonds, mixing rich gold with platinum.

And as Jewelsmith fans, you know how we love giving old-cut diamonds a new POV. These diamonds may have old souls, but their new settings bring them beautifully into the modern era with an old, but new-again, jewelry piece.

Tiffany brought the designs, Patrick brought the goldsmithing magic, and together they created three distinct pieces that play beautifully together.

Wear one. Stack them up. Scatter them across a lapel. Share them with someone you love… or absolutely do not 😉

Brooches are back, baby. Although around here, we’d argue they never really left.

Spinel: August's lesser-known birthstone 💎

Often overshadowed by their more famous gemstone counterparts, spinels have a beauty and a history all their own. For centuries, red spinels were even mistaken for rubies, including some rather famous stones in royal collections.

Tracy puts three spectacular spinels in the spotlight, each with a color and character all its own, plus a personal favorite from her own jewelry box: her ombre spinel necklace.

Beyond their beauty, spinels are wonderfully wearable. Ranking 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, they’re durable enough for everyday jewelry and an excellent choice for rings, earrings, pendants, and bracelets.

Rare, colorful, durable, and still a little under the radar? That’s our kind of gemstone.

Jewelsmith Pro Tip: Your jewelry deserves a spa day! ✨🫧

We love that you love to wear your jewelry. Daily wear and even occasional wear means daily things and occasional bumps that happen to your jewelry that we don't even think of because we're busy life-ing! So, here's your reminder to get your jewelry cleaned and checked at least 2x a year... we like to align it with a 6-month dental visit, but for your jewels. It's preventative AND refreshing.

May takes you behind the scenes of our multi-step "clean and check" process:

🔎 First, the inspection. One of our goldsmiths carefully examines the metal and checks that every gemstone is secure. We also check the gemstones' condition for you.

✨ Next, the polish. The metal is refreshed to restore its beautiful finish and luster.

🫧 Then, the deep clean. Your jewelry takes a dip in our ultrasonic cleaner to gently loosen the dirt and debris that can hide in all those hard-to-reach places.

💨 Finally, the steam. A finishing steam brings back that irresistible, just-left-Jewelsmith sparkle.

Yes, you can use at home cleaners in a pinch. For the whole nine, come see us.

Jewelsmith Pro-tips: The more you know, the more you sparkle. 🌈✨

When's the last time you had your clean and check? Give us a call or send a text and we’ll have your Jewelsmith pieces sparkling again. Visit our website to get in touch 🔗
