What the Outside of a Home Can Tell You About Pest Activity. When bugs keep appearing indoors, the area outside the home can provide useful context. Mulch, fallen leaves, dense shrubs, and standing water can provide shelter or water near the structure. Vegetation can also make it harder to see the foundation and exterior wall.

Keep shrubs trimmed so the wall remains visible, remove excess leaf debris, avoid piling mulch against the foundation, and correct standing water where practical. Openings around utility lines may be worth noting, but one condition does not prove where pest activity began. Do not move or seal gas, electrical, or air-conditioning equipment yourself. A qualified trade professional should handle utility-related repairs.

How Often Should You Reapply a Store-Bought Pesticide? There is no single schedule for every product, pest, or location. The full label tells you where, how, how much, and how often a specific pesticide may be used. Before another application, make sure the pest and the area are listed, then follow the stated interval and every precaution. Do not use more than directed or reapply sooner than the label allows.

It can also help to reduce accessible food and water and remove hiding places where practical. If activity continues, do not assume that applying more product will correct the cause.

Why Do Bugs Keep Showing Up Under a Sink? The location can offer clues, but it does not identify the pest or prove where the activity started. Leaks, spills, open gaps, and clutter can provide pests with water, shelter, or movement routes around plumbing areas.

Check for visible moisture around supply lines and drain connections. Dry spills, have confirmed leaks repaired, remove clutter, and look for accessible gaps around pipes, baseboards, and cabinet edges. Do not assume that every dark mark is pest evidence.

The right response depends on identifying the pest and the conditions supporting it. If you use a pesticide, follow every label direction, including precautions for children and pets.

Noticing crawling insects around your indoor plants? A sticky monitoring trap can show that activity is occurring in one location, but it does not identify the insect, prove that the plant is the source, or correct the conditions supporting the activity.

Ground-level rooms can see more crawling-pest activity because landscaping, moisture, and small gaps around doors, windows, pipes, or baseboards are nearby. Keep the area around the plant clean, remove fallen leaves, avoid standing water, and seal accessible gaps. Follow the product directions and keep monitoring traps away from children and pets.

집 사고팔기 전 꼭 터마이트 확인 절차를! 미국에서 터마이트의 문제는 봄이 되면 극에 달합니다. 요즘 분명히 흰개미는 아닌데, 날개 달린 검은 개미 모습의 터마이트(땅속에서는 흰개미이지만, 짝짓기를 하면 검은색 날개를 달고 나옵니다)를 잡아 벌레박사 사무실로 오시는 분들도 계시고, 터마이트가 갉아먹은 나뭇조각을 떼어 오시는 분도 계십니다. 또는 미국 회사에서 터마이트 리뉴하라는 편지를 들고 오시는 분들도 계십니다.

이런 모습을 보고, 20년 전 미국에 이민 와서 터마이트 방역 회사를 시작할 때 터마이트가 무엇이고 그 피해에 대해 한인 사회에 알려 드렸던 생각이 납니다. 이제는 한국 분들도 터마이트에 대해 그 문제점을 충분히 아시는 것 같아 그 나름대로 미국에 이민 와서 한 역할을 했다는 자부심을 느낍니다.

부동산의 경기가 시작하는 시즌인 봄이지만, 아쉽게도 터마이트 문제는 클로징까지 가는 데 복병이 될 수 있습니다. 지난주에도 부동산 계약까지 하고, 홈 인스펙션 등 모든 절차가 순조롭게 진행되었지만 덜 중요하다고 생각한 터마이트 인스펙션에서 터마이트 피해가 있다는 보고서가 나와 클로징에 어려움을 겪게 되는 경우를 보게 되었습니다.

행여나 셀러에게 터마이트 피해에 대비한 워런티(Warranty)가 있는지 확인도 해 보았지만, 집 파는 일이 너무 바빠 터마이트에 대한 생각은 해 본 적도 없다고 하였습니다. 이분의 경우 입주할 때 집 짓는 빌더가 1년을 해 준다고 해서 넘어갔고, 그 후 매년 터마이트 회사와 관리 계약을 하지 않았고, 입주한 지 10년 정도 된 지금까지 터마이트 관리 없이 사셨던 것이었습니다.

셀러는 집안이 깨끗하므로 터마이트 같은 벌레는 절대 없고, 돈 드는 서비스는 절대 필요 없다고 생각해 왔다고 합니다.

벌레박사는 기운이 쑥 빠졌습니다. 그렇습니다. 미국에서는 법적으로 집을 지을 때 집 짓는 빌더가 1년간 터마이트 워런티를 주게 됩니다. 집을 지을 때 콘크리트 슬라브(slab)에 터마이트 약을 뿌리거나 베이트 통을 심어 1년간은 책임을 지게 하기 때문입니다.

중요한 것은 1년 후에 터마이트 회사와 계약을 해서 관리를 해야 하는데, 대부분 이 개념을 모르시고 미루시거나 바빠서 터마이트 관리를 지속적으로 안 하시게 되는 겁니다. 그러면 결국 위의 경우처럼 터마이트에 대해서는 무방비 집이 되고 마는 것입니다.

우리가 집을 구입해 집 안을 꾸미는 것처럼, 우리 집의 땅 밑에는 터마이트가 자기들의 생활을 하기 위해 부지런히 먹이를 찾고 있습니다. 보통 1에이커에 3천만 마리의 터마이트가 있으면서 아무런 조치를 취하지 않는다면 그 결과는 터마이트 피해로부터 무방비 상태가 됩니다. 혹시 독자님들의 집은 터마이트에 대해 어떤 방어를 하고 있는지 시간이 나시는 대로 집 주변을 확인해 보시기 바랍니다.
