Most gemstones form in the crust, but peridot and diamonds form deep in the Earth’s upper mantle. Some peridots come from pallasite meteorites that fell to Earth, and NASA even found peridot in comet dust.

Ancient Romans called it the “evening emerald” because its bright green color does not fade in artificial light or at night.
