Here's the recipe. 26 diamonds. 6 baguette blue sapphires. 1 emerald-shaped blue sapphire. 8 grams of gold.

I've never been one to follow a recipe, however each of these diamonds represented career milestones, and she didn't want any leftovers.

And the dessert? Upgrading her center blue sapphire.

When the time came to begin cooking this meal, my desk looked very similar to my kitchen....a mess.

Pencils, stencils, calipers, millimeter rulers, leveridge gauge, Gardettos, ( I was hungry ) - scattered about as I tried to lay out the perfect plan and avoid any leftovers.

How did the meal turn out?

Men, I hear all the time, "I'll just take whatever, silicone band is fine."
I get it. Why get something nice when either it's coated with WD-40 half the time, or you'll lose it, eventually resurfacing the next fishing season while digging for your favorite Rapala.

You can have nice things too. Just put a GPS tracker on it.

This ring was for a gentleman who enjoyed the cooler things in life. Big, bold, silver rings. And at 24 grams, its enough to give his forearms a workout.

The timing was perfect. A fellow designer had just posted his latest creation and I knew this guy would love it. Email sent. 15 minutes later a reply, "I'll take it."

I asked the designer his inspiration behind such a wild piece. His answer, "Pink Floyd. The premise behind that raised lip is that it creates...The dark side of the moon."

Look close at this one. A dark blue enameled galaxy next to... the Moon - a high quality Moonstone with a striking electric blue flash and billowy adularescence, complimented by the moons textured landscape.

You can almost hear the lyrics as I type.

Thank you for treating yourself to a work of art, and for showing us males it's ok to sport shiny hardware.

What?!

I've said this more times than I can count.
Guests come in for a custom design, bringing in Ziplocs full of jewelry, all tangled around one another like shiny fishing knots.

Once upon a time, jewelry came from catalogs that weighed as much as a small boat anchor.

Our parents and grandparents thumbed through those pages, hopped in their AMC Eagles, and drove to the nearest big-box store to scoop up the deal of the year.

Those very same pieces are now making their way into my office today.
And ultimately, their cherished relatives have one more gift in store for them.

"What am I going to do with all of this?" they ask.

Unbeknownst to them, the pieces in those Ziplocs have value.
Gold was $317/oz in 1985.
As of Friday, gold closed at $4,340/oz.

But I always ask which pieces are sentimental, and which ones they'd ultimately like to use toward a new gift from Grandma & Grandpa, or Mom & Dad.

There's always a jewelry box or two that holds their favorite pieces:

The diamond Grandma only wore during their nights out.

The ruby Dad gifted her Mom in a packed house at Christmas.

The thick diamond pinky ring his Uncle never took off.

We set those pieces aside to be used later.

Whether we recycle the old gold or use it as trade, the result is oftentimes the same; no payment necessary. Those shiny fishing knots just paid for your new bespoke piece.

Grandma & Grandpa. Mom & Dad. They often have one more gift to give.

And one we know that next lucky generation will fight over.

I was starting to lose hope. I had no idea where to start.

I hear this all the time.

I tell everyone: if you have a sudden inspiration to create something fun, quirky, meaningful, whatever the case may be, I'm here to help.

Case in point...can you guess what this is?

One hint...it's a body of water.
..Still no luck?

This pendant is the outline of Nagawicka Lake. The opal marks the location of her home.

I love the originality of this. She's proud of where she lives. It's not so much about the jewelry itself, but what it represents.

I've had a lot of projects like this over the years; people wanting to create something unique and meaningful for themselves (or someone else), but having nowhere to go and no one willing to take it on.

It's not about the bottom dollar, nor is it about the size of the project. If it's important to you, it's important to me.
