Hi friends and farm followers… I hope you’re all doing well! May has been flying by….I can’t believe we’re halfway through another week and closing in on the end of the month already.

Just a quick note to say I won’t be on here much for a while. I’m leaving tomorrow for 3 weeks! I honestly can’t remember the last time I was away that long. For so many years, I never wanted to be far from my boys. Now that we’re empty nesters, you’d think I’d be thrilled to pack up and go.

I am excited for the travel and new experiences, but there’s also a little sadness mixed in. It may sound silly to some but I’m going to miss tending to my gardens and all the food we’re growing. I hate leaving my farm babies for so long, too. And of course I’ll miss my husband, although it gives me comfort knowing he’ll be taking care of everything at home while I’m gone. It’s a lot of extra work on top of his “real” job, but I know he’ll handle it just fine.

I keep thinking about everything that could go wrong but need to stop. I have to remind myself that worrying is senseless and the thief of happiness.

Anyhow, just letting you all know what’s going on in case anyone wonders why I’ve temporarily disappeared. I’ll be back again later next month. Meanwhile, take care!

Wouldn’t it be great if we could read people as well as we can animals? . It’s very obvious when my donkeys are happy to see me.😆❤️🫏

I’m going to be out of town a lot in the coming weeks so trying to squeeze extra loving time in with my animals before travel starts soon. I’ll miss them all so much.

Our boys (grown adult sons) are home this weekend!

💙💙💙

I am outside looking for fresh eggs for breakfast. Addie is guarding the duck’s favorite laying spot.

It already feels like Full on summer down here. Hot and humid with temps in the high 80s. Our honey bees are extra thirsty. According to the books I’ve read, this is actually a good sign that our property is supporting our pollinators. Honey bees need lots of extra water once temperatures rise because they use it to cool the hive… sort of like evaporative air conditioners. By midsummer when we are in 90’s and upward , many worker bees will spend most of their day collecting water.

It’s Forage Friday! While in the woods exploring with my goats, I spotted a pop of color out of the corner of my eye. I snuck away from my herd to check it out. A gorgeous native passionflower…maypop (Passiflora incarnata).

It’s fruit (maypops) is edible. The leaves and flowers are also commonly dried for herbal tea and are traditionally associated with relaxation and sleep support.

It’s one of the most intricate and beautiful wildflowers with historical Christian symbolism. I was thrilled to find it growing here!

Baby J-Phat is growing like a w**d and still sooo cute! He’s easily doubled in size in the less than 2 months I’ve had him but he’s still too small to feed with the herd. I continue to bring him into the barn for breakfast every morning. I usually get some busy work done in here while he eats his grower grain.

A few min ago, I could hear crunching sounds so turned around to find him like this….his head deep in the bird’s bag of scratched grains. Little stinker! 😆

P.S. i caught him quickly so he only managed to sample a tiny bit

I was just out in the donkey pasture freshening water buckets when Mimi alerted me to this little turtle tucked down in the grass. I picked her up to move her back toward the pond and realized I had interrupted something …she was in the middle of laying eggs!

After realizing she was busy with important work, I left her be. I marked the spot with a cinder block and even set myself a calendar reminder for a couple months from now so I can watch for hatchlings. Once the time gets close, I’ll probably close off this section of pasture to help keep the babies safe on their little journey down to the pond.

Just one of those quiet country moments that reminds me how much life is happening around us out here if we slow down enough to notice it. I’ve learned that Mother Nature has a way of rewarding those of us willing to spend time outside yo observe and appreciate it.

Jethro and his new chick!

🐐 ❤️ 🐔

I’ve witnessed plenty of budding farm romances over the years, but this one might be the most unexpected yet. An odd couple for sure… but who am I to judge? There’s someone for everyone.
