Happy New Year to you all! Yes, we closed our business for good yesterday at 5pm but wanted to put out this message as it came up as we celebrated the end of our time at 65 Main Street with good friends who stopped by at the very end to wish us well. Someone asked, "How did you come up with the name Stars?". I said "Oh, that was John!", and went on to explain. John grew up in London, and as anyone who grew up in a city knows, the night sky is not clearly visible due to artificial lighting which is everywhere 24/7. That sweet man came to Maine with me on the promise we would open and succeed at creating a jewelry store. We had found our first spot on Theater Street in Damariscotta where we stayed for 10 years before we made our move to Main Street. Right after we signed the lease, we knew we needed a name. We thought of several, but nothing "fit". As we were living with my mother in Boothbay Harbor when we first landed here from England, we walked the footbridge in that town often. One night as we were standing in the middle of the bridge looking out to the ocean, John looked up and as a child would in discovering something beautiful for the first time, he said "Look at all the stars in the sky!". We looked at each other in knowing amazement and said almost in unison "That's it!!! The name of our shop will be Stars!". We thought it was rather perfect; the word "stars" is a lovely word in itself, it is sweet, short, and memorable, and to us, it represented twinkly, beautiful sparkle which is what jewelry is, too. So, in what is now one of our last postings as Stars Fine Jewelry we both wanted you to know that Stars was named after the stars in the Maine sky. We hope you think of us fondly as you see those stars above and know the love that was put into our shop's name. (P.S. The attached painting is my work; enjoy!)
