Big news for one of the world’s rarest and most lovable birds!
New Zealand’s adorable, round-bodied kākāpō is making an incredible comeback, and conservationists have a lot to celebrate! These unusual, flightless parrots had their best breeding season ever in 2026, welcoming an amazing 90 chicks!
What makes this even more exciting? Kākāpō don't breed every year. Their breeding depends on special native trees producing an abundance of fruit, something that may happen only once every few years. That makes every new chick incredibly precious.
Once pushed to the brink of extinction, with just 51 known birds remaining in the 1990s, the kākāpō population has now climbed to more than 300! That's a huge victory for a species that nearly disappeared forever.
Thanks to decades of dedicated conservation work, predator-free sanctuaries, and people who refuse to give up on these quirky nighttime parrots, their future is looking brighter.
